Sachin Bhargava, an Electrical Engineer, and Pooja Bhargava, a NIFT Delhi Post Graduate with a MA in lighting design from Wismar, Germany, have combined their expertise to establish a lighting control, and technology centre named Studio Johns in the vibrant city of Jaipur, India. With a background in architectural lighting products and extensive training from leading lighting companies, they offer comprehensive services in design, supply, and experiential lighting solutions. Studio Johns provides personalized guidance to stakeholders, contractors, and architects, empowering them to make informed decisions and create impactful lighting designs for their projects.

In an exclusive Interview Sachin and Pooja Bhargava speak about their journey, their challenging projects and more …

Studio Johns is one of the most reputed companies in the industry. Can you take our readers through your journey so far…?

Studio Johns, is a technology, engineering and lighting design company. It is co-founded by Sachin Bhargava and Pooja Bhargava. Sachin Bhargava, an electrical Engineer is the technology and engineering mind, whereas Pooja is a creative soul. She is a NIFT- Delhi graduate and Master in Lighting Design (Architectural Lighting & design Management) from Wismar, Germany.

We started the company in 2002. One day world renowned architect Dr Anoop Baratria called us in his office in 2016 and asked us, if we would be interested in lighting the world’s first heritage walkway in Amritsar. We, immediately grabbed the opportunity and there was on looking back.

Today, we boast an experienced team to ensure good design, better installations and best results.

Can you mention some of the landmark projects you worked on, which have been a turning point in your career in terms of experimenting with new lighting techniques/designs or introducing innovative concepts?

In, 2016 we designed, supplied and commissioned the world’s longest heritage walkway- 1km heritage walk in Amritsar. It is from Town Hall to Jaliawalabagh to Darbar Sahab) Golden Temple.

In 2022, we designed and completed India’s first outdoor museum on ‘Constitution of India’ in the beautiful Pink City- Jaipur. In 2023, Architectural lighting of 3KM of world’s longest heritage riverfront on either side of Chambal Riverfront.

Both the public places projects have been ahead in terms of lighting and have been carefully lit up without the use of flood, making each facade low voltage consumption, darkness friendly, well-planned, and better installed

What are your views on the importance of Lighting Design in a project?

Lighting Design is a subject poorly implemented in India as the awareness is still low within communities and stakeholders. With LED’s becoming cheaper and powerful, we must stop the misuse of selection/over selection while choosing LED fixtures. Let’s not look at wattage but lumens output from a fixture while selecting.

Secondly, public places should not be flooded/over lit up. We are losing the night view of skies from the city because of over lighting. Not everything needs to be switched ON every day and every night hour. Automation should be used to plan the timings of these facades.

Thirdly, I feel there should be a guideline for lighting up the facades in the city. The facade belongs to the city. The city needs to have a theme ‘vision’. Lighting designer should align their designs to the theme/vision of the city.

Every government project should have a lighting designer on board before executing a project.

What is the biggest innovation in the lighting sector? How has it revolutionized the entire industry?

Well, innovation is a continuous process. We see the changes every month in LEDs, allowing the fixtures to be super small yet powerful. There is a lot of growth in linear fixtures as they are futuristic design. Controls have become wireless and the entire package of lighting and control have a lot to offer in terms of innovative design.

As a Lighting Designer, which lighting control brands do you prefer?

So, for us each project and application have a futuristic, easy to use brand. For example, when we do-residences, we love to play with KNX using JUNG switches, wireless using CASAMBI. In case of large project installation like a public place we use Schneider/ABB for KNX, CASAMBI for wireless and MADRIX for DMX.

What are your views on the Smart lighting industry? According to you, in which sector (hospitality, commercial, residential), is traditional lighting getting rapidly replaced by smart lighting?

Smart lighting is the need of the hour. It finds usage in every sector, every application on every day basis. With power becoming expensive, sustainability becoming a challenge it is the need of the hour for government to act and Implement/mandate specifications for complete and holistic implementation of Smart Lighting Controls at least in public places in India.

If we have to live with “Ease of living” becoming a norm in India by 2047, there needs to be documents prepared, vision boards made by the government for SMART LIGHTNING.

For the second part of the question, larger spaces, bigger installations will always be more beneficial and viable financially if smart lighting is implemented.

Unfortunately, I don’t see much happening on the ground level as the tender are not prepared with guidelines in mind.

How do you foresee the Smart Lighting Industry 5 years down the line in India?

Five years down the line…

  • The ‘Make in India’ initiatives will be present. There will be at least +30 more companies into manufacturing.
  • Complete manufacturing, including diffusers and chips will start within the country.
  • Indian lighting standards, city vision documents/guidelines would be laid out.
  • BSR of government bodies will be more elaborate smart and sustainable in terms of specifications.
  • Every electrical circuit will have some sort of automation.
  • Applications will increase, light business will increase but quantitative installation per square feet will reduce and become meaningful.

Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a futuristic trend in the lighting industry with health and mental wellness being the top benefits. What are your views on the same?

All living things responded to light in a different way. Human Centric Light will find application in most of the environment spaces working in 24 hours of day. I feel, it will enhance productivity and have better mental and health impact on living things.

However, controls, AI and overall space and location will also play an equal and dynamic role while designing futures spaces.

As the smart lighting market is fragmented into various segments – such as type, applications, end-users, and distribution channel, how does Studio Johns provide the best lighting solutions that suit consumer needs?

Unlike a lot of others, we are a team of engineers, First and designer Second. So, to say that our stress on controls, drawings, implementation, commissioning is far more time-consuming because of a vast experience in controls, education in lighting design and a complete team to ensure end-to-end feel that our designs have far more impact than those who only design.

Our designs always have comprehensive technical parameters to match heritage, modern/ facade goals.  Our team is well-trained with manufacturer’s design, files and renders.

I began with saying we are technology, engineering and lighting company. We are in continuous hunt and in huger to adopt technologies, use AI, Controls Media as to opt for designs out of the box to create, showcase mesmerising experiences.

So, we are leading and growing every year. We want to be recognised for meaningful designs.

We love to add emotions and culture into installations. We want to design to have foot prints in every state of India and beyond.

Finally, we want to make an impact and contribution in the making of “Developed Bharat” ensuring and preserving our culture & heritage in the coming years.

What we show as render is what we deliver.

From Street light poles, bollards to Architectural Lighting, we do all AutoCAD, renders, Dialux, 3-D, VR in house.

Tell us about the user experience with IoT and AI automation systems as the future of Smart Lighting

The idea of showcasing, IOT and AI at the booth was to make people experience the power and usage of AI and understand futuristic concept. AI is a game changer and opens a pandora box to unlimited application and usage.

Future belongs to control and engineering, lighting will only be a product to be consumed in these applications. The mind-blowing application we display with immersiveness and instructiveness were a true delight to the user. And this is just, beginning…

As I said earlier lighting and controls go hand-in-hand. It’s like a marriage, good design smart system will only work if both lights and controls are smart and understand each other.

Although, I see a lot of crossing in this domain, these days, where light suppliers are also in control integration. So, both roles are equally important and are depending on each other.

Architect Kapil Surlakar is a visionary in the field of lighting design. With his company, Light@Work, Surlakar is revolutionizing the way we perceive and interact with light in our built environment. From architectural masterpieces to immersive experiential installations, Surlakar’s creations blend artistry with functionality, enhancing spaces and evoking emotions through light. Through this exclusive interview and stunning visuals, Smart Home World, delves into Kapil Surlakar‘s creative process, inspirations, and the philosophy behind his awe-inspiring creations of Light@Work

Light@Work is one of the most reputed companies in the industry. Can you take our readers through your journey so far?

As an architect, my fascination with lighting design and its impact on architectural spaces drove me to seek deeper knowledge in this field. Recognizing the lack of expertise in lighting within our profession and the absence of a shared vocabulary to articulate our design visions, I pursued a Master’s degree in Architectural Lighting Design at Hochschule Wismar in Germany. This marked the beginning of my journey into lighting design.

In India, where awareness about the profession of lighting design was scarce, I saw an opportunity to fill this gap. In 2005, I founded Light@Work in Mumbai, one of the pioneering lighting design practices in the country. Over the years, our team has grown to include architects with specialized training in lighting design, as well as architectural assistants. Together, we are committed to promoting the importance of our profession through a combination of design excellence and ethical principles.

It is essential to distinguish between qualified lighting designers and those who merely claim to be professionals in this field. The presence of unqualified individuals and businesses offering lighting design services undermines the quality of work within the Indian design community. Therefore, both clients and design professionals must exercise caution and discernment when selecting lighting design expertise.

In an era where ethical practices may seem undervalued, we remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We believe that prioritizing ethics is not just a moral imperative but also a prerequisite for delivering exceptional design solutions that truly enhance the built environment.

Can you mention some of the landmark projects you worked on, which have been a turning point in your career in terms of experimenting with new lighting techniques/designs or introducing innovative concepts?

I started my journey as a One-man office wherein I was introduced to the under-construction Akshardham Temple Complex in New Delhi. It was a 92 Acre Site. After a few failed attempts with international Lighting design offices, I was accorded the opportunity to make a presentation and was able to garner their trust. I was entrusted with the task of designing the Lighting for the Temple Complex Masterplan as well as Detailing the Important structures for Façade and Interior Lighting. Technical and product support was provided by M/s Light Craft Singapore and M/s Shimera Project Lighting, Mumbai. Manpower support was provided by the BAPS Trust, which was the client.  Those were exciting times. I was armed with New Knowledge and a hope and desire to make a mark. A project of such importance and magnitude, with high visibility is a dream start to one’s career. It was divine intervention, that also guided me and gave me the courage to embark on and successfully deliver the project that was applauded Internationally and was Awarded the IESNA Paul Waterbury Award of Excellence in St. Missouri, USA. This was a project resolved with conventional Light sources before the advent of the LED. It was a more creative exercise that applied both Architectural and Lighting design Principles effectively to create the desired installation. We are currently involved with Many projects of that Scale, which include Residential Layouts, Heritage Sites, Commercial Buildings, Infrastructure projects, etc. Some solutions are enabled more effectively by the technology, and we are in the process of Installing Media Facades and Content-based solutions on Infrastructure projects. Today Technology is at the forefront and new conventions are being set. However, our strong belief is that the Design process and input that effectively use the various technologies appropriately, with experiences and knowledge gained over the years, holds the design in good stead instead of blindly adopting technology without relevance and feasibility. We see technology as an enabler but still believe it’s the subject knowledge of the designer that dictates the appropriate use of the same.

As a member of IALD, you have presented many case papers at international summits. What are your views on the importance of Lighting Design in a project?

I am not a member of the IALD. I was a member of PLDA which is now defunct.

Light is an entity, a force, that is directly connected to Human well-being. The very fact that we wake up in the morning is that sunrise suppresses the melatonin secretion into the bloodstream, which leads to awakening. There are other aspects of how light affects the physical health, mental and psychological health of humans and other living organisms. Lighting can be effectively used to emotionally manipulate human response by altering visually induced perceptions. These are the aspects that are very important in facilities that work 24/7 in environments that are completely cut off from natural daylight. It is also a very important tool in Retail and sales.

One must evaluate the project based on what one wants to address and achieve out of the situation to benefit the occupants. Today, the talk largely revolves around the efficacy of the Light sources and the basic CCT, and CRI discussions. The most misused word today is “LUX”. Unhindered Proliferation of Technology is further confusing the consumers and making them lose focus on their intended tasks. Technology is great, only if used appropriately, with knowledge.

Lighting is of utmost importance to any project. Unfortunately, a large emphasis today is only on the visual rendition of Architecture, which gets noticed and recognised, similar to the loud `Social Media Influencer, whereas the more scientific aspects of lighting, the non-visual effects, more relevant to Human Health and well-being are not yet being widely recognised and accepted. The amount of light pollution in the urban pockets of India is also responsible for lifestyle changes, leading to disturbed sleep cycles, resulting in serious Health hazards.

A good Lighting design is sometimes such that you enjoy the space without any discomfort and yet do not see anything spectacular.

What is the biggest innovation in the lighting sector? How has it revolutionized the entire industry?

The biggest Innovation that changed the norm was the LED. It brought about a paradigm shift in the way lighting design could be perceived. The LED made the light source compact and easy to conceal. It brought in flexibility and the possibility of various forms. Changed the way it could be addressed and communicated with. It was now intelligent. What was missing in the early generation LED and is being now addressed effectively by most is the quality of light that the LED emits. The spectral quality of light which is the most critical aspect defines the degree of performance of the light source for varying applications.

As a Lighting Designer, which lighting control brands do you prefer?

There is a plethora of Lighting Control Systems available. New systems and signal protocols emerge regularly. Systems vary from hard-wired, and hybrid to wireless systems. The developers or manufacturers are indigenous or multinational with varying degrees of capabilities. Every project has a specific requirement, and the control system is ideally selected as per the role it must perform. Some systems offer highly specialised user interfaces, which command the client’s attention and therefore end up being the deciding factor. However, the decision for a control system is evaluated on the scale of the project, the system capabilities, ease of use, sturdiness, User interfaces for aesthetics, the dimming and control protocols and signals used, ability and ease of scaling up or down, as well as a strong deciding factor of the cost of the system.

What are your views on the Smart lighting industry? According to you, in which sector (hospitality, commercial, residential), is traditional lighting getting rapidly replaced by smart lighting?

“Smart Lighting” is a marketing term used to loosely describe the various technologies that have made lighting addressable and responsive within defined parameters. The knowledge of the available technologies and their “smart” application in the design of the lighting system can result in a smart system. Smart lighting technologies allow you to program light sources w.r.t intensity and colour, or to render the installation into static or dynamic modes. It can also be used to get feedback from the system to monitor power consumption and failures, which allows to maintain an effective and efficient system. Applications could be across all sectors; however, the related costs have a better return on larger systems.

How do you foresee the Smart Lighting Industry 5 years down the line in India?

The Potential is huge. However, the knowledge of these systems and their working has to reach the end users, through the right channels, including the consultants and designers who guide them. I experience resistance to the dissemination of knowledge, and this creates impediments to a knowledgeable acceptance and application of these technologies with the confidence they demand. I hope technology and its benefits are conveyed appropriately, unlike some brands that use film stars and celebrities to promote technology, using glamour and with no relation to technology or knowledge.

Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a futuristic trend in the lighting industry with health and mental wellness being the top benefits. What are your views on the same?

Again, HCL is the approach based on the understanding of the non-visual effect of light on humans and on other living organisms. Any educated Lighting Designer would study this as a part of the curriculum. Application is Key. Every design, be it architectural, interior design, or Landscape, in any scale, is designed to meet the needs of humans and end users, Lighting Design should be no different. HCL should be the Fundamental basis of any design and not a Trend. A deeper knowledge and understanding can help to deliver specialized solutions specific to Health and Wellbeing.

As the smart lighting market is fragmented into various segments – such as type, applications, end-users, and distribution channel, how does Light@Work provide the best lighting solutions that suit consumer needs?

Light@Work is a Design Consulting Company, with educated and qualified Lighting Designers. We ideate, conceptualise, and resolve the Lighting design for any project collaboratively, aligning with the goals of the project, client, and other Lead Consultant/s to achieve the end goal. Light@Work defines the Lighting strategy and the appropriate technology, detailed specifications, and resources. All this is done within the financial framework set by the client. Where the financial boundaries and technological aspirations do not align, we ensure that the same is informed to the client in a transparent manner, enabling him to decide to increase the budgets or curtail the aspirations. All in all, communication with well-defined solutions, options and cost implications is Key to getting a client decision and progress towards the desired outcome.

Tell us about the user experience with IoT and AI automation systems as the future of Smart Lighting.

IoT or Internet of Things refers to a system of communication between various devices in the system with the help of sensors and actuators which helps in addressing and monitoring any system remotely or through a control user interface, wired or unwired, through cloud computing. These are largely system management tools that allow the monitoring and efficient use of resources deployed. This however does not help to achieve the right ambient lighting unless the core lighting basics are adhered to. This, therefore, can truly be termed as a smart Lighting system design, and not smart Lighting.

Your views on LED revolution and lighting control. What are the latest trends in Lighting Systems and lighting controls?

The LED is ever-evolving, and we are now able to discern and achieve LED sources with high spectral performances. The continued development in the LED source is encouraging for a good visual quality of light. As for the Lighting Control systems, the new trends are moving towards scalability and wireless communication protocols, largely applicable in large facilities or urban-scale lighting projects.

How important is collaboration with a system integrator while doing a lighting project?

A system integrator essentially is a technician who has the knowledge of the various components of a designed system, not essentially from a single manufacturer. It is ideally his duty to test and guide on the compatibility of the various components of any system or provide suggestions for suitable alternatives for compatibility. It is with this feedback that the designer can streamline the system design. The Integrator then has to ensure that the system is made operational as desired and responds to the signals in a way it has been designed to function. A knowledgeable system Integrator is a Key collaborator in a lighting project that relies on any form of automation.

What is your future vision for your Company?

The future for Light@Work is to continue doing creative and meaningful work that is in line with our company motto, “Ethical Design Excellence”. We are developing partnerships and exploring design solutions with the new technologies and hope to expand our geographical reach beyond what it currently is. We want to grow without compromising on the Ethical practices for business.

Digital transformation has been one of the main strategy topics on company board meeting agendas for the last few years. The opportunity to develop digital services from cloud-based applications requires Internet protocol (IP) based network connections to edge devices that become the customer interface. Businesses of all shapes and sizes in commercial building automation have been asking for wireless IoT solutions to make this happen.

The wait is finally over and the opportunity is right here, right now, with the launch of KNX IoT Point API (KNX IoT). This is a new addition to the suite of KNX physical transmission media. The transmission medium is IPv6 (the later Internet protocol standard) thus future-proofing KNX as it can be used on IT equipment and all common IP physical transports.

KNX Association contracted Cascoda, a-UK based IoT semiconductor and communications company, which has spent 12 years building industry-leading knowledge in this area, to develop the KNX IoT Point API open-source software stack, thereby catapulting itself into the leading wireless IoT solution for commercial building automation. The new open-source software stack is based on the robust, tried and tested Thread Mesh LPWAN wireless standard. This has been extended with banking-level security and all that is required to be a perfect product market fit for KNX users.

What is Thread?

Thread is a IPv6-based low-power wireless mesh network-layer protocol. Thread enables direct IP-based device-to-device and device-to-cloud communications. It reliably connects hundreds (or thousands) of products and includes mandatory security features. Thread mesh networks have no single point of failure, can self-heal and reconfigure when a device is added or removed, and are simple to setup and use.

Why is IP important?

IPv6 vs IPv4

With IP communications, each device has a global unique identifier called an IP address, which allows it to be uniquely addressable over the internet. There are two systems in use, namely IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 uses a 32-bit address space, which equates to 4.3 billion, while IPv6 has a 128-bit address space which equates 340 undecillion global unique addresses. Thread uses IPv6, thus allowing seamless scalability.

IT vs OT

IP-based infrastructure is already installed in buildings and forms the IT network. IP technology has become fast enough and reliable enough to run our Operation Technology (OT) infrastructure. Since IP technology is also the basis of the internet, IP-based technology is at the heart of any digital transformation strategy.

No gateways

By contrast, non-IP based protocols require a gateway to connect to the IT network or the internet. The setup, configuration and maintenance of such gateways is complex and often requires an on-site engineer. IP-based technology however simply requires a router.  IT professionals are highly proficient at setting up, configuring and maintaining IP-based equipment and tools for performing such work remotely are commonplace.

Multi-protocol support

The other major advantage of IP-based technology is that multiple applications can share the same wired or wireless IT infrastructure. This means that for example a Thread network can be installed in a building for the DALI+ lights to be configured, and the KNX IoT HVAC system can later be installed, sharing the same Thread infrastructure of routers. Such sharing of infrastructure is normally not the case with proprietary technology.

Why is wireless important?

Wireless connectivity is important because the cost of wiring-up infrastructure is costly and time-consuming.  However, the most common IP-based wireless technology, Wi-Fi, has been designed for the streaming of large packets of voice and video data, rather than the occasional transmission small packets of sensor and actuator data.

Moreover, Wi-Fi is based on a star topology to each access point and even Wi-Fi mesh is based on a star-of-star topology, which limits the maximum number of nodes. Also, Wi-Fi has not been designed to support sleep-modes and it consumes too much power for long-term battery operation.

Proprietary wireless protocols have been developed to overcome many of the above issues, but they are not IP-based.

Thread mesh

Self-managing

Thread forms a self-managing, self-healing, mesh network. Thread devices can upgrade themselves to routers and downgrade to end nodes dynamically, as the needs of the network change. This allows Thread networks to be installed by unskilled professionals and minimises the need for mesh network management.

Energy efficient

Thread devices can sleep to minimise power consumption, and securely re-join the network at any time. Since Thread has been designed for sleeping and re-joining, the process is seamless and very fast, which is important for power-constrained devices.

Secure

Thread has been designed with security from the ground-up, and mandates established Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) security standards. The use of established IETF security standards future proofs Thread against forthcoming cybersecurity standards.

Below is an example of a Building Management System (BMS), using IP-based connectivity, including Thread.

KNX IoT and Thread

The KNX IoT specification and the associated open source software stack have been developed specifically with small low-power embedded devices in mind. This means that the choices made in both the specification and the stack work very efficiently on Thread devices.

Indeed, Cascoda has implemented KNX IoT on its Thread-certified wireless modules, which run with as little as 512kB of storage memory and 96kB of memory and implemented the security with ARM® Trust zone® constructs.

Figure 2 – Cascoda’s Thread-certified wireless modules

Summary

The advantages of KNX IoT are that the new technology is IP-based and can therefore be used over IT networks. It has been developed with guaranteed interoperability with existing KNX technology, and it uses latest underlying internet-based technologies in its specification, thereby making KNX IoT secure by design.

Cascoda will shortly be releasing a KNX IoT over Thread development kit, and later a series of reference designs for particular applications. This development kit has been designed for flexibility and allows a huge range of commercially available sensors and actuators to be used, thereby covering thousands of use cases.

Bruno Johnson and Wouter van der Beek are the CEO and COO respectively of Cascoda Limited. Cascoda is a communications company that manufactures secure IoT semiconductor radios and modules, and leads the development of secure IoT communications standards for smart building and smart city. Its products solve range, reliability, security, power and scalability issues for industrial and commercial IoT through patented innovations and the latest most secure standards, all integrated into inexpensive ultra-low power IoT modules.
