Architects Shabbir H Lilamwala and Murtaza Lilamwala have designed a stunning residence for the Korani family in Ghatkopar, blending design, home automation, and air purification technology seamlessly.

Designed by Homework Design headed by Architects Shabbir H Lilamwala and Murtaza Lilamwala Principal Architect Homework Design, this residence epitomizes opulence, sophistication, functionality, and a seamless blend of home automation creating an unparalleled living experience.

Nestled within a prestigious high-rise in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, this luxurious 5-bedroom apartment, meticulously crafted by Homework Design, stands as a testament to architectural excellence, interior sophistication, and seamless integration of technology.

Upon stepping into the foyer, guests are greeted by an aura of elegance and grandeur. The interiors boast a harmonious fusion of contemporary design elements with classic accents, creating a timeless appeal. The spacious living room serves as the focal point of the residence, exuding warmth and comfort with plush furnishings, bespoke artwork, and tasteful decor pieces curated to perfection.

The kitchen, a culinary haven, is a testament to both style and functionality. Clad in premium materials and equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, it seamlessly integrates with the living space, allowing for seamless entertainment and culinary experiences.

One of the most striking features of this apartment is its impeccable ventilation. Natural light floods every corner of the abode, enhancing the sense of openness and serenity. The strategically placed windows not only provide ample sunlight but also offer breathtaking views of the city skyline, serving as a constant reminder of Mumbai’s bustling energy.

The five luxuriously appointed bedrooms are havens of tranquility and indulgence. Each room is thoughtfully designed to offer the utmost comfort, with sumptuous bedding, custom-made furniture, and intricate detailing that reflects the owner’s discerning taste. Moreover, the city view from the bedrooms adds an extra layer of allure, offering a picturesque backdrop that evolves with the changing hues of the sky.

In addition to the lavish residential quarters, this apartment boasts an expansive office space, perfectly suited for remote work or business endeavors. The balcony l provides a serene outdoor retreat, ideal for relaxation or entertaining guests amidst the backdrop of Mumbai’s skyline.

Integration of Automation and Technology

The design team worked with System Integrator Harsh Shah from Beyond Alliance. Harsh Shah has worked towards providing user-friendly solutions tailored to the specific needs of clients. Adding his insight Murtaza Lilamwala says, “There are three non-negotiables for any tech design that we plan: (1) It has to work. (2) It must be easy to use yet fulfill all needs and (3) It has to be value for money.”

The home has automated lights, fans, curtains, AV, HVAC, and Integrated security solutions in this house. The Crestron lighting design and control are executed to perfection, with natural light in the space creatively manipulated to harmonize with artificial light. Motorized shades and drapes play a crucial role in achieving this seamless integration.

The attention to detail is evident in every aspect, with keypads meticulously selected from around the world. Each button is laser engraved, ensuring user-friendliness for individuals of all ages and tech-savvy levels. This house boasts a living room equipped with a motorised ultrashort throw projector with an optical dNp screen and an immersive in-ceiling audio Dolby Atmos surround sound system.

Speaking about the security systems Murtaza Lilamwala says, “We have also used an integrated security solution, where a facial ID and biometric reader is waiting to unlock the space at the speed and efficiency at which our iPhone unlocks itself. As a visitor notifies you with the same gadget a display phone in the kitchen or next to their bed helps them to FaceTime the visitor before they let them in. The same display can stream music in the room and control the colour temperature and intensity of every light to set the right vibe for that time of the day.”

The user experience is further enhanced through tailored Apps catering to individual needs, allowing customization at the user level with controls on their phones, tablets, watches and voice commands.

Balanced Ventilation with Energy Recovery

Modern apartments are designed air tight for comfort and avoiding noise and air pollution. This results in lack of adequate cross-ventilation to the occupants in the house. We rely on air conditioning systems to achieve comfort however fresh air ventilation is sacrificed as a result.

“To solve this problem, we have opted for Blutherm, introducing the concept of Balanced Ventilation with energy recovery to cater to the above scenario of ventilation in modern houses. Balanced Ventilation with Energy recovery involves a machine that supplies measured filtered fresh air in the living spaces like bedrooms, study rooms, and living rooms in the house, and extracts stale air from bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms at the same time. During this process both streams of air pass through a heat exchange module in the machine, that transfers the temperature of the air by up to 90% without mixing the air, thereby pre-cooling the outside fresh air passively before it enters the house, resulting in a reduced load on the air conditioning systems.” Explains MURTAZA LILAMWALA.

The Benefits and Functionality:

The benefits of implementing Blutherm system are multifaceted, addressing crucial aspects of indoor air quality and comfort. Firstly, it ensures a constant supply of fresh, filtered air, promoting a healthier living environment and enhancing overall hygiene by reducing the presence of airborne contaminants. Moreover, the system effectively curtails the formation of mold and fungus, contributing to the maintenance of a clean and sanitary atmosphere within the household.

In addition to its health benefits, the system offers significant energy-saving advantages. Through passive cooling, it alleviates the strain on traditional air conditioning units, resulting in reduced energy consumption and lower utility costs. Furthermore, by facilitating a quieter and pollution-free indoor environment, it enables occupants to enjoy a peaceful and tranquil living space without the disturbances of outdoor noise and air pollution.

While the Energy Recovery Ventilation machine serves as a cornerstone of the system, the ducting infrastructure is equally instrumental in its success. Blutherm has developed a manifold ducting system featuring semi-rigid antimicrobial flexible ducts with smooth linings, meticulously designed to seamlessly integrate with the machines and maximize operational efficiency.

The benefits of these ducts are manifold. Their 3-inch diameter allows for installation with minimal false ceiling margins, streamlining the implementation process. The manifold design effectively prevents cross-talk between rooms, ensuring privacy and comfort for occupants. Additionally, the antimicrobial smooth lining of the ducts promotes hygienic airflow, while their flexible nature enables versatile deployment in various configurations. Moreover, each duct is pre-engineered to carry a specific volume of air, simplifying calculations and ensuring precise implementation on-site.

The Helios KWL system from Germany has been successfully deployed, further attesting to the efficacy of the balanced ventilation with energy recovery solution. Equipped with Electronic Commutating motors, an integrated IoT module, and humidity sensors, the system operates autonomously, adjusting airflow based on indoor air quality, and enhancing convenience and efficiency for the client.

This luxury apartment designed by Homework Design, exemplifies a harmonious blend of architectural brilliance, interior elegance, and cutting-edge technology integration.

Samsung Electronics shared its vision for how Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology will enable people to experience their devices more intuitively and conveniently than ever before. Presenting these ideas at the press conference at CES® 2024, Samsung teamed up with key partners to outline the technology behind this vision and how new products and services use AI capabilities to make life easier.

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division, opened the press conference by describing how AI will enable connected technologies to improve people’s daily lives while always remaining nonintrusive and “in the background.” The strategy that he and others outlined focused on the role of AI in enhancing connected experiences that are both simple and useful. Throughout the press conference, Samsung presented several products and services that help achieve these aims.  “With the emergence of artificial intelligence, smarter, better experiences will redefine how we live,” Han said. “Samsung’s broad portfolio of powerful devices, along with the pursuit of open collaboration, will help bring AI and hyper-connectivity to all.”

During the CES press conference, Jonathan Gabrio, Head of Connected Experience Center at Samsung Electronics America, outlined the ways in which AI technology is transforming how Visual Display products and Digital Appliances are used. For example, Samsung Neo QLED 8K QN900D boasts a built-in AI Processor, NQ8 AI Gen 3, equipped with an 8 times greater AI neural network and a two times faster NPU than its predecessor. Thanks to the NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, Samsung Neo QLED 8K automatically upscales low-resolution content to provide users with up to 8K quality viewing experience and sharpens fast-moving images via AI Motion Enhancer Pro. The Samsung Neo QLED 8K also features Active Voice Amplifier Pro, which analyzes voice and background noise by AI to optimize your TV listening experience so you can enjoy various content as if you are in the front row of a stadium or movie theater. Samsung Neo QLED 8K also features Tizen OS Home, which offers the latest apps, services, personalized content, and service recommendations to upscale your entertainment experience.

As for viewers with different needs, Samsung also provides innovative accessibility features. A sign language feature in Samsung Neo QLED can be easily controlled with gestures for the hearing impaired, and an Audio Subtitle feature turns text subtitles into spoken words in real-time for those with low vision.

Furthermore, Samsung is introducing the new The Premiere 8K, a projector that features not only a 150-inch display, but also the world’s first wireless 8K transmission for a projector. With The Premiere 8K, users will be able to enjoy a full-scale viewing experience like that of the cinema in the comfort of their own homes.

As for sound, Samsung also introduced Music Frame, a speaker with a customizable cover that integrates seamlessly into users’ homes. Via Q-Symphony, the Music Frame syncs with Samsung TVs and soundbars, bringing enriched bass and surround sound of dual built-in woofers to the home with minimal effort.

Samsung has also made major upgrades to Ballie, the rolling AI robot first introduced at CES 2020. Ballie has now evolved into your AI companion capable of interacting with other smart devices to provide customized services such as taking care of bothersome tasks or projecting images and videos on walls so that users can view key information for their daily lives such as weather or other relevant content wherever they are.

To enhance kitchen and food experiences, Samsung is unveiling the Bespoke 4-Door Flex™ Refrigerator with AI Family Hub™+1 2. This refrigerator boasts a 32-inch screen that features the new AI Vision Inside3, which uses an internal camera to recognize up to 33 different food items that are put into and taken out of the refrigerator and suggests recipes using those ingredients. Users can also set “use by dates” on the Bespoke 4-Door Flex™ Refrigerator with AI Family Hub™ screen for food items, which then allows the refrigerator to send a notification when the set date draws near. By conveniently helping to save money by reducing food waste, these AI features enable more environmentally conscious lifestyles. The Anyplace Induction range takes AI connectivity a step further, as recipes saved on Samsung Food can be shared to the cooktop’s 7-inch display so that users can easily follow along while cooking.

Samsung’s AI technology extends to appliances beyond the kitchen, as well. The new Bespoke AI Laundry Combo™ — an All-in-One washer and dryer — features the AI Hub4, which is a 7-inch LCD display that acts as an intuitive control center for managing laundry, allowing users to enjoy a simple washing and drying experience. It personalizes washing and drying by remembering users’ habits and using machine learning to suggest cycles. Meanwhile, Samsung’s upcoming vacuum and mop robot cleaner, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo™5, utilizes AI technology to provide a more convenient, effective cleaning experience. With AI Object Recognition upgraded from the previous robot cleaner lineup, it will be able to distinguish more objects, as well as detect stains and spaces6. The Bespoke Jet Bot Combo™ also recognizes the type of floor it encounters — along with carpet length — and adjusts its settings accordingly.

Samsung’s Vision for SmartThings:

Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, highlighted the exciting new ways in which AI technology is impacting the relationship between users and their devices, including Samsung’s vision for SmartThings: The more Samsung devices a customer uses, the smarter those devices become and the better they can understand and support daily life.

Spatial AI is the key to enabling this vision, by helping devices understand the living space and routines of the user, thus enabling more a personalized home management experience. SmartThings uses LiDAR9 on connected devices like robot vacuums to create digital floor plans so users can easily check the status and location of all their devices.  And in March, SmartThings will roll out the upgraded 3D Map View for a more detailed experience on Samsung smartphones and TVs. Furthermore, a simple QR code will allow users to add family and friends to their SmartThings ecosystem, so that every member of the household can create their own routines.

Using smart sensors and AI, SmartThings will be able to detect unusual circumstances, such as a fall, and send alerts to designated family and caregivers10.  Also, thanks to the Galaxy SmartTag2, users can track their pets’ activities and digitally store identifying information by attaching the tag to a collar or harness11.

Another point EVP Jung discussed was how the Bixby voice assistant is allowing smart homes to become more dynamic with its enhanced AI capabilities. Bixby can now automatically route commands to the most appropriate devices based on an understanding of the user’s location and activities.  Key technologies like Multi Device Wakeup combined with a shared communication protocol, enable Bixby to listen to commands with all the devices in a room but then only perform the requested action on the most relevant device. So if a user is in the kitchen watching a recipe video on their Family Hub™, and they can call out, “Hey, Bixby! Play music!”  At that point, music will play from the user’s smart speaker, but the recipe video will continue to play on the Family Hub™, uninterrupted.

The TV, with the Samsung Daily+ service, will increasingly become a central hub for much of this smart home functionality, while also granting access to a variety of additional services. These include video calls through ConnecTime, video veterinary consultation services12, and Workout Tracker — through which workout data can be transferred to Samsung’s smart watches. Samsung also announced the new Samsung Now+ service, which displays useful information about users’ homes, such as the weather or a live security camera feed from a home security system without the TV even being turned on.  As is the case with SmartThings features, users can also access this information via voice command.

Samsung Focuses on Security and Privacy Across Devices

In this future of AI-enabled, deeply interconnected devices, Samsung recognizes that security and privacy are paramount. Shin Baik from the Mobile eXperience Security Team discussed the company’s security solutions as a foundation for the hyper-connected era.

One such solution is Samsung Knox Matrix, which now provides end-to-end encryption across many Samsung Galaxy smartphones and smart TVs. The technology will allow devices to monitor each other to identify and isolate security threats. Knox Vault, which helps keep user data safe on some of Samsung’s most popular devices, has been expanded to cover more devices connected by SmartThings, such as Samsung Neo QLED 8K TVs. Additionally, Samsung’s partnerships with major tech companies allow users to experience security and privacy in a way that is tailored to their specific needs.

Samsung is adding new features to increase device accessibility, such as digital appliances responding to hands-free gestures. Additionally, mobile devices provide auto-generated captions during calls, and TVs and displays offer a new, AI-enabled text-to-speech feature that converts subtitles into spoken audio. To further aid those with low vision, Relumino Together is a new viewing mode on Samsung TVs that enables users of all abilities to watch TV together, with or without visual adjustments. Now, everyone can enjoy home entertainment together at the same time.

A preview of Immersive Audio technology that is reshaping and elevating our auditory journey; seamlessly blending into the ambiance and emotions of your home. Dive deeper into the world of Immersive Audio to discover the transformative impact it can have on your audio experience.

In the fast-paced and digitally connected world that we live in, home entertainment has evolved from a luxury to a genuine necessity. It has become an integral part of modern living, transforming homes into havens catering to relaxation and recreation.

As technology continues to advance, the evolution of home entertainment reflects society’s growing need for convenient, versatile, and immersive experiences that enrich our homes and lives. In home entertainment the role of audio systems extends far beyond mere sound reproduction; it plays a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing the overall mood and experience within a living space. A well-crafted audio environment has the power to transport individuals to new dimensions, creating immersive and memorable moments within the comfort of one’s home.

Over the years, sound reproduction technology has made great leaps, evolving from a basic monoaural audio system—that is, single audio channel to today’s surround sound systems, which range from a minimum of 5.1 (6-channel) or 7.1 (8-channel) setups suited for home theatres to large 64-channel and higher setups for cinema screens. The spatial sense of sound and its accuracy in these systems is however limited to the number of speakers and the positions they are in.

One of the latest buzzes in the music industry is Immersive Audio. For those who are not familiar with Immersive audio, it is a generic term that describes a broad range of technologies designed to make the sound listening experience more lifelike and encompassing for the listener. Immersive audio aims to create a three-dimensional sound experience, which means listeners can perceive sounds coming from all around them, including from above and below, not just from left and right. This is achieved using various technologies and techniques, such as surround sound, object-based audio, and binaural audio.

Dolby Atmos is a specific immersive audio technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. Unlike traditional audio methods that distribute sound across different channels, it’s an object-based audio technology that breaks audio down into individual objects that move around in a three-dimensional space. With Dolby Atmos, sounds are precisely placed and moved anywhere in a room, including overhead, to make the entertainment experience sound more realistic and immersive.

Dolby Atmos is a form of immersive audio, but not all immersive audio systems use Dolby Atmos. Other formats, such as Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D, Sony 360 Reality Audio, MPEG-H 3D Audio (ISO/IEC 23008-3), DTS:X, THX Spatial Audio, and Discrete Immersive, and others provide immersive audio experiences but use different technologies or standards. The exact specifications and performance can vary depending on the technology used and how it’s implemented.

Therefore, while Dolby Atmos is a proprietary technology with specific standards and requirements, immersive audio is a broad term encompassing various sound technologies, including but not limited to Dolby Atmos.

Here are some notable brands known for providing immersive audio experiences

Dolby Atmos
is a well-known immersive audio technology used in cinemas, home theaters, and mobile devices. Many audio and video equipment manufacturers integrate Dolby Atmos support into their products.

DTS is another audio company that provides immersive sound technology, particularly DTS:X, which competes with Dolby Atmos in the home theater and entertainment space.

Auro Technologies (Auro-3D) is an immersive audio format that adds a vertical dimension to sound. Some home theater receivers and high-end audio systems support Auro-3D.

Sony 360 Reality Audio: Sony offers a 360 Reality Audio platform that delivers a three-dimensional audio experience. It is supported by some Sony headphones and compatible streaming services.

Sennheiser AMBEO technology is designed for immersive audio experiences, particularly in the realm of 3D audio for headphones and VR.

JBL Synthesis is a well-known audio brand, that offers immersive audio solutions under its JBL Synthesis line, including speakers and audio processors for home theaters.

KEF is a brand that produces high-quality audio equipment, including speakers that support Dolby Atmos and other immersive audio formats.

Bose is recognized for its audio products, and they offer some immersive audio solutions, especially in the home entertainment sector.

Functionalities and Integration:

Speakers (Discrete) – Immersive audio involves reproducing music using both ear level and height speakers, usually placed on or in one’s ceiling. As the name suggests, listeners are immersed in music from the sides, rear, and top. Typical loudspeaker configurations accomplish this: 5.1.2 (5 ear level speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 height speakers) and 7.1.4 (7 ear level speakers, 1 subwoofer, 4 height speakers). Surround speakers + height speakers = discrete immersive audio.

Speakers (Virtual) – Immersive audio can also be played through two speakers, with the help of advanced digital signal processing, to reproduce the horizontal surround and vertical dimensions encoded into the music.

Smart Home World speaks to Audio/ Video Consultants and Brand Heads who have transformative space by using immersive audio. They share their experiences incorporating immersive audio in projects, revealing how it has exceeded user expectations and fulfilled their desires.

Mehernosh K Pervez, Audio/Video Consultant, Sound Decisions

I bring extensive knowledge and practical experience in implementing immersive audio formats, including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D. While our specialization leans toward luxury homes, the foray into television MPEG-H 3D remains unexplored. Dolby Atmos, renowned for its object-based audio precision, finds applications in cinemas, home theaters, and various devices, delivering a captivating three-dimensional auditory experience. Parallelly, DTS:X mirrors Dolby Atmos, offering object-based audio for a convincingly lifelike soundscape. Auro-3D distinguishes itself by incorporating both height and overhead channels, notably employed in high-end home theaters and select commercial installations.

In crafting immersive audio setups like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, a thoughtful fusion of solutions is adopted to meet specific preferences. This includes a mix of traditional speakers, ceiling or upward-firing speakers, soundbars, in-wall/on-wall speakers, and wireless alternatives for retro scenarios. The integration extends to subwoofers, pivotal for infusing depth and impact into low-frequency effects.

Integration with AV Components

Ensuring a seamless blend with other AV components, the integration process spans AV receivers or processors that act as central hubs, supporting formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Precise speaker configuration, calibration tools, and synchronization between audio and video playback form the bedrock, complemented by integration with control systems such as smart home platforms and lighting control systems. This meticulous integration guarantees centralized management, facilitating an immersive viewing experience.

Compatibility across diverse audio sources, encompassing streaming services and physical media, is a hallmark of our systems. Formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are seamlessly supported on popular streaming platforms and physical media like Blu-ray discs. A vigilant approach to compatibility checks, HDMI support, and regular firmware updates ensures adaptability to the ever-evolving landscape of audio sources and formats.

Trusted names include Trinnov, Storm Audio, Anthem, Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, and Onkyo for AV receivers/processors, along with speaker systems from Legacy Audio, CAT, Artcoustic, Bowers & Wilkins, and PMC. Devices from Sony, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Sim2, Barco, Sony, and Christie are preferred choices for streaming and media compatibility. These brands are selected for their reliability, quality, and adaptability, making them preferred options for integrators and installers navigating the dynamic terrain of immersive audio technologies.

Ashish Hingorani, Managing Director, Avenue Sound

We have extensive experience working with leading immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D, as well as for television, MPEG-H 3D Audio. Immersive audio has revolutionized sound reproduction, enhancing the listener’s experience with its multi-dimensional qualities. In our projects, we strive to integrate these formats into Dedicated Home Theaters and Media Rooms, adding an extra layer to audio that immerses users, providing heightened realism and accuracy to the sound stage.

We carefully plan speaker layouts to accommodate major immersive formats—Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D—in Dedicated Theater Rooms and, when space allows, in Media Rooms. By future-proofing the room with a speaker design that accommodates multiple formats, we ensure clients can fully enjoy content encoded in any of these immersive audio technologies.

Our immersive audio solutions cover a wide range, from independent speakers for each channel of direct sound to more compact options like soundbars. We advocate for a comprehensive experience with discrete channels of audio, but when space or aesthetics are limiting factors, we integrate soundbars, emphasizing that the experience may be more virtual than what individual speakers can provide. Whether it’s in-wall, on-wall, or tower and bookshelf speakers, our choice depends on the room’s acoustics, aesthetics, and client preferences.

Integration with AV Components

Integrating immersive audio systems with other AV components is a crucial aspect of our approach. As immersive audio and smart technology often go hand in hand, we align these systems with high-resolution video solutions. To enhance user experience, we seamlessly integrate audio/visual solutions with lighting, window shadings, HVAC, and more, consolidating control into a single user interface. This holistic integration elevates the overall realism, offering a premium, unified experience.

Ensuring compatibility with various audio sources is a priority. All streaming services, digital content, and audio services, including Tidal and Apple Music, support immersive audio playback. With nearly every new Blu-ray release and digital audio source supporting digital outputs, we guarantee that our immersive audio setups can decode and reproduce signals from a diverse range of sources, providing a rich and immersive audio experience for our clients.

Arjun Agarwal, CEO, Cinerama Pvt Ltd

Cinerama Pvt Ltd stands out as a leading provider of premium home entertainment solutions, dedicated to delivering exceptional audio and visual experiences. Renowned for its unwavering commitment to excellence, the company caters to discerning clients seeking cutting-edge home theaters and immersive audio setups. Emphasizing state-of-the-art technology, the brand seamlessly integrates high-end audio-visual components into its offerings, featuring renowned products such as Klipsch RP-8060FA II, Jamo S-27FA, Klipsch RP-500SA II, Onkyo SR-3100, and Pioneer LX-805.

With over 700 movies released with Dolby Atmos, the technology has become the dominant immersive audio standard, complemented by popular alternatives like DTS:X and Auro 3D. It’s crucial to note that passive speakers, commonly used in various configurations, do not inherently offer immersive audio technologies. However, “Dolby Atmos speakers” provide a unique exception.

These Atmos speakers come in two types: integrated Atmos speakers, such as Klipsch RP-8060FA II and Jamo S27FA, with built-in upward-firing modules, and standalone upward-firing speakers like Klipsch RP-500SA II, designed to be placed on existing floor-standing speakers. Directivity is a critical factor for Dolby Atmos speakers, and Klipsch’s use of precision-controlled horn technology contributes to the worldwide popularity of their Atmos speakers.

In building an immersive sound system, the A/V receiver plays a pivotal role. Notably, Onkyo has introduced an entry-level 8K 5-channel AVR with DTS:X, the Onkyo SR-3100. Both Onkyo and Pioneer have been at the forefront of incorporating Dolby Atmos into their 5-channel AVRs, providing consumers with a more immersive listening experience. Additionally, flagship AVRs from Onkyo, Integra, and Pioneer, namely the RZ-70, DRX 8.4, and LX-805, feature Auro 3D, further expanding the options for a captivating audio experience.

These systems will bring a 360-degree immersive sound experience to home theatres without requiring a large number of speakers positioned around a listener. However, a lack of environmental awareness about the listener and the listening environment will be a major impediment to these systems in meeting the demands of immersive audio. A fusion of vision intelligence with sound reproduction is key to overcoming the impediments and bringing the next generation of immersive audio systems to life.

Samsung and Google have been working behind the scenes to create a new 3D spatial audio technology to challenge the likes of Dolby Atmos.  ‘Immersive Audio Model and Formats’ (IAMF), is claimed to be the first open-source 3D spatial audio technology. Work on IAMF began back in 2020 through Samsung and Google’s joint venture, ‘Project Caviar’, which drove the idea of pushing open and royalty-free HDR video and 3D audio alternatives.

In conclusion, we would say, that the journey into immersive audio is marked by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and a pursuit of audio-visual perfection. As technology continues to evolve, immersive audio stands as a testament to the industry’s dedication to delivering not just sound, but an unforgettable and immersive entertainment experience that resonates with the desires of audio enthusiasts and home theater connoisseurs alike.

The development of IAMF stemmed from the recognition of limitations in existing 3D audio solutions, such as Dolby Atmos. Samsung’s research team identified that current technologies fail to properly interpret 3D sound information, resulting in a diminished audio experience.

IAMF addresses these shortcomings by incorporating three key features: vertical sound, AI scene analysis, and user-customized audio. “IAMF enhances sound realism by allowing listeners to experience audio in front, behind, or to either side, as well as above or below them. This means that when IAMF technology is integrated into home TV speakers and soundbars, listeners can experience sounds like birds flying overhead on their TVs,” explained WooHyun Nam from Samsung Research’s Visual Technology Team.

Google and Samsung’s New 3D Audio Standard IAMF

IAMF also employs AI and deep learning algorithms to intelligently analyze scenes and adjust audio levels accordingly. For instance, during scenes with prominent background music or soundtracks, IAMF balances the sound to ensure the main focus remains on the dialogue.

Likewise, personalized audio customization options further enhance the IAMF experience by allowing users to tailor the audio to their preferences. These options include adjusting the intensity of sound effects in action scenes or enhancing dialogue clarity during conversations.

Samsung’s adoption of Dolby Atmos in its TVs in 2022 signaled the company’s commitment to immersive audio experiences. However, its decision to stick with its own HDR10+ format over Dolby Vision raised questions about its future relationship with Dolby Atmos.

With the advent of IAMF, Samsung appears to be charting its course in the 3D spatial audio space, potentially signaling a shift away from Dolby Atmos in future Samsung TVs.

Jaleel Sabir, Founder, Mahavir Soundroom speaks to Smart Home World about the latest advancements in technology, creativity, collaboration, and his future vision for his company.

Mahavir Soundroom is where luxury meets technology to create unparalleled experiences in home automation and home cinema. With a reputation synonymous with high-end luxury, MSR caters to the Who’s Who, setting new standards in the realm of bespoke creations. Each MSR project is a masterpiece, a testament to innovation and craftsmanship that leaves the world in awe. From integrating cutting-edge technology to curating the finest brands, MSR has redefined the very essence of home automation, taking it to a level beyond imagination. Smart Home World showcases some of their projects, where every detail is crafted to perfection and luxury knows no bounds.

Mahavir Soundroom is one of the most reputed companies in the industry. Can you take our readers through your journey so far?

Our incredible journey started as a pioneer of luxury home cinema and automation since its inception in the 90s. Our story began with a simple desire to build a remarkable sound system, and little did we know that it would lead us to become a pioneer in the industry.

As the concept of surround sound was still nascent, our passion for creating the perfect sound system for ourselves soon became a shared fascination among our friends. Together, we embarked on a journey to build sound systems that mesmerized everyone who experienced them. With enthusiasm and dedication, we grew, attracting more like-minded individuals, and our journey took a decisive turn when we established Hyderabad’s first Home Cinema store with a dedicated demo room and an impressive LD and DVD library.

Over the years, our endeavors expanded, and we took on prestigious projects, leaving an indelible mark with the sound systems we designed for iconic landmarks like the Golconda and the Taramati Baradari. As our reputation grew, we ventured into various industries, leaving our expertise in corporate spaces, educational institutions, auditoriums, shopping malls, and control rooms.

Today, our focus lies in integration, installation, and automation processes, offering a comprehensive range of in-house services. We take immense pride in providing around 40 diverse products and services, ensuring our customers have a wide array of options to meet their unique requirements.

Being esteemed members of CEDIA, the industry standard in the professional audiovisual realm, is a testament to our commitment to excellence. With every project we undertake, we strive to redefine the boundaries of luxury and technology, crafting experiences that leave a lasting impact on all who encounter them.

As we continue to evolve and innovate, we are grateful for the unwavering support of our valued customers and partners. The future holds boundless possibilities, and we eagerly look forward to creating more unforgettable experiences with you by our side.

Can you share with our professional readers some of the revolutionary Home Theatres you have worked on, which have been a turning point in your career in terms of experimenting with new Sound Technology and High-end Automation, or introducing innovative concepts?

The essence of our journey lies in the relentless pursuit of visionary projects across diverse industries. From awe-inspiring Light and Sound shows to transforming corporate spaces and crafting mesmerizing home theaters, each endeavor has propelled us beyond limits.

One such groundbreaking project that pushed our boundaries was the world’s first Trinnov rack with 5x amplitude for a single theater. For this technological marvel, we incorporated an astounding 10 kW of amplification, powering a remarkable array of 37 speakers. This challenged both technical and design-related standards and became a trendsetter. Over the years, we enriched our knowledge and delivered exclusive and innovative sound systems for various spaces.

An unforgettable turning point came when a client approached us with a 24-channel home cinema concept, inspired by an Italian showroom. Instead of simply assisting the Italian integrator in India, we took a bold stand. MSR’s unwavering commitment to excellence drove us to decline the project, stating our principle of installing only projects designed and supplied by us. We were determined to deliver a system that surpassed the client’s Italian inspiration.

This pursuit of excellence led us to collaborate with the talented Sawan Nichani of MacBee. Together, we set out to create a groundbreaking 32-channel Home Cinema with 37 speakers, a feat that was unprecedented at that time. This revolutionary project not only expanded our creative possibilities but also showcased our dedication to turning visionary concepts into reality.

We take immense pride in this exceptional project that not only met but exceeded the client’s vision. This achievement has become a symbol of MSR’s commitment to redefining the boundaries of sound system design and installation.

As we continue to embrace challenges and seek new opportunities, our passion for innovation remains unwavering. Each project, big or small, continues to inspire us to go the extra mile, leaving an incredible mark on the luxury home automation and home cinema industry.

What are your views on the importance of Lighting Design in a home cinema?

Lighting design holds immense significance in both home cinemas and residential spaces, as it has the power to transform the entire ambiance of a room. With a simple touch of a button, you can instantly infuse energy into the entire house or craft a captivating atmosphere for a specific area.

In the realm of home cinemas, lighting takes on a crucial role, setting the stage for an immersive movie-watching experience. As the lights dim with the commencement of the film, a warm and nostalgic feeling washes over you, reminiscent of the enchanting ambiance of a traditional theatrical setting.

Beyond its role in creating a cinematic atmosphere, lighting serves multiple purposes. It enhances visual comfort, ensuring a pleasant viewing experience for extended periods. Moreover, it contributes to the overall aesthetics of the space, elevating the interior design and making it visually appealing.

In the comfort of your own home, lighting becomes a key ingredient in curating an enjoyable cinematic journey. It complements the audio-visual elements, allowing you to indulge in a truly captivating movie-watching experience.

What is the biggest innovation in the home automation segment? How has it revolutionised the entire industry?

The biggest innovation in the Home Automation industry is that of Control Automation. It has made Automation very easy to use for any age group by creating a very user-friendly GUI (Graphic User Interface). It has also made the integrator’s job very easy by reducing the programming time drastically. We’ve always tried to break the mould and come up with solutions that are new, modern, and unique. As far as automation goes, there was a time when it was in the early stages when it came to India, and we did the integration of heating of the pool, integration of the fireplace, integration of the bollards, and integration of the lift. If suppose a car is detected 100 metres from the house, the lift overrides all the functions, comes down, opens, and stays for the owner. The bollards go down after informing security. So, the level of automation that we achieved was futuristic in those times. The automation segment today is integrating everything that is connected in a house, including your lighting, AC, curtains, security, Audio/Video and access control. Earlier, each of them was handled individually. Today, with the constant, cutting-edge evolution of automation, you can integrate every technology in the house and use it seamlessly. For instance, in a home cinema with a click of a button, you can close the curtains and dim the lights while the projector gets warmed up for viewing and all your electronics are ready for a nice movie experience. All you have to do is rev up the volume to your desired level.

What are some of the most challenging Smart residential projects you have worked on where there was scope for adopting the latest Smart Home technology?

Over the years, we have had multiple residential projects, and the requirements expected to match the vision were quite challenging; however, we managed to exceed the expectations, and one such residential project we designed was for an entire house in 2008. We had to make audio and video installations throughout the house. We had different kinds of installations made. Whether it was designing and creating glass speakers for the Pooja room, custom speakers with digital art for the master bedroom as well as the daughter’s room, or creating rock speakers for the terrace, we had to come up with the designs and plans for the house. For the home theatre, we had to fit In- wall digital speakers. While the requirements then were new, they were certainly challenging as well as fascinating at the same time.

How do you foresee the home cinema industry 5 years down the line?

I think we’ve barely reached the tip of the iceberg. As infrastructure keeps developing, so will the houses and spaces designed for it. Home cinema has almost become skeletal, like the structure of a house. Every new house has a home theatre designed for it. There is huge scope for home cinema, especially in India. There’ll be far more sophisticated and advanced smart home integrations as well as audio technologies in the future. The availability of good content to stream or watch is abundant as compared to 20 years ago. With an increase in content to watch, visual and spatial audio can reach undiscovered heights. For instance, a few years ago, we were working on a home project, and our briefing was to create a ‘maximum result with a minimalist look’. A few years down the line, we’re not sure what’s in store for us, but we’re definitely open to trying the best of what technology has to offer.

IoT and AI automation systems as the future of this segment? Can you share your views on the same?

While the pace at which IoT and AI automation are coming into our lives can be a little unexpected and overwhelming, we need to accept that soon they will become a part of all of our lives. With respect to MSR, our vision is to incorporate all the services and technologies that are going to foster the best solutions for our future projects, not just in Hyderabad but across India.

What is your future vision for your Company?

Essentially, what we at MSR strive for every day is to create rooms that become one-stop shops for all forms of entertainment. We always intend to make sound rooms where you can enjoy unrestrained music without worrying about disturbing others. In the coming years, we don’t just want to expand our creativity and plausibility in redefining sound rooms; we also want to leave an immersive and unparalleled experience for our clients. We’ll constantly keep evolving and redefining acoustics, personalization, sustainability, and advanced multi-purpose rooms to levels unheard of.
