Havells India Ltd. has been consistently developing new products to cater to the growing smart home market. As the market is showing good growth trends in the wireless range, Havells has launched its new range of Signia Smart modular Wi-Fi switches in a very attractive new Grey Colour. These Smart Switches are mated to the Havells Signia platform and offer a full suite of features ranging from switching, dimming, curtain control, Fan/AC, smart bell and scene controls.

Another recent launch is the new Monoblock solution I Sense, this is a very cost-efficient solution that offers premium looks with all automation features. This solution offers all automation features and is based on the ZigBee platform to offer superior connectivity and is well-suited for large apartments and villas. Both these solutions are highly adaptable and scalable and can be used both in new constructions and retrofit jobs.

 Your product line spans Switches, Automation, and Video Door Phones. Have there been recent technological advancements integrated into these categories, and if so, could you provide details on these innovations?

Technology improvement in smart products and solutions is an ongoing process and is constantly changing. Some of the recent advancements have been the integration of Wi Fi features in our video door phones, these features enable a user to be able to remotely communicate with visitors at their home. The homeowner can remotely monitor the outside area of his home and also give remote access (if integrated with an electric lock). Our Wi-Fi video door phone is fully integrated with our I sense automation solution.

The Signia Smart Bell push is another new upgrade that converts a normal doorbell into a smart doorbell by offering features such as Bell ringing notifications and DND, the unique 4 Scene controller in the Signia Smart range is a multi-use product that offers easy scene control features, features such as All On /Off & Two way switching.

Smart Home Technology is perceived as complex by users. How does Crabtree prioritize user-friendliness in product design, and are there specific features aimed at enhancing ease of use across your product line?

Our wireless automation solutions are designed to offer a DIY-level simplicity, these solutions offer multiple ways of controls that suit the needs of every generation of family as the solutions can be controlled via touch like a simple switch, via mobile app, via voice assistants and also via Remote controls (available in some solutions)

Does Crabtree’s product line seamlessly integrate with other smart home devices, ensuring compatibility with various setups? Please elaborate on the integration capabilities.

Havells India Ltd is a multiproduct organisation with many consumer-facing product categories, we are building one of the largest ecosystem of smart products on the state-of-the-art Havells Sync platform which offers deep integration of a range of smart appliances ranging from water heaters, air conditioners, smart TVs, smart appliances, smart fans etc. Havells sync platform has further been certified to work with Samsung Things.

With a diverse range of offerings, could you guide professionals on which Crabtree products are suitable for Residential, Commercial, Hospitality, and other segments?

Havells Buspro and KNX solutions are top-of-the-line wired automation solutions which are highly suitable for new structures. These solutions work on Cat 5/KNX wiring and can be adapted for use in both residential and commercial buildings. These are full automation suites that offer extensive integration and automation possibilities. These solutions offer a range of luxurious wall panels ranging from touch button panels to touch screen panels that offer high luxury aesthetics.

These solutions offer an extensive suite of hospitality. Ranging from guest room solutions, to solutions for banquets, restaurants, façade and common areas, our hospitality solutions are compatible with most used Hotel Property management systems.

The Havells Crabtree Wireless range is well suited for adoption in both new and retrofit structures. The wireless solutions can be adapted at any stage of construction without the need for any rewiring or structural changes. These premium solutions offer a wide variety of features with high scalability and premium aesthetics and different product solutions available in different price brackets.

Crabtree’s Buspro is a KNX-based solution. Could you explain its advantages and how it stands out in the market?

Crabtree Buspro solutions are offered on two distinct platforms, Buspro is a proprietary wired technology offering a full suite of wired automation products, Buspro KNX is an open standard platform that allows wide integration possibilities and offers an extensive range of products.

Between the two platforms Crabtree wired automation offers a very wide range of dimmers available in different flavours for every type of dimming technology be it phase cut, trailing/leading edge, DALI or Analogue, the range offers extensive integration with a large number of infrastructure devices like actuators, controllers, wall panels and easy integration with most leading brands of third-party automation controllers

IoT is transforming industries. How does Crabtree contribute to this transformation, especially in smart homes and connected devices?

Crabtree IoT devices offer a range of features that allow for running the connected lights/appliances on schedules, timers and integration into various scenes and with concepts like Day light harvesting and Sensors, Havells Crabtree automation promotes high sustainability with energy savings for residences and commercial building.

Havells Crabtree offers one of the widest retrofit solutions in the industry. There is a solution for every need available at different price points. The retrofit solutions are offered in three distinct types:

∙        Havells Crabtree Wirefree NXT – behind-the-switch solution

∙        Havells Crabtree Signia Smart Solutions – Based on the extensive Signia modular architecture these are modular switches that offer full features of automation, multiple ways of controls and a range of premium faceplates

∙        Havells Crabtree I Sense: This is a uniblock wall panel solution with preset configurations, this is based on the Mesh technology to offer latency-free operations across larger areas.

Crabtree Touch screens offer uber premium aesthetics and are available in different sizes. There are different ranges for the touch screen panels:

∙        DLP Touch – This range is available in both US & UK form factors and Black & White colours with hybrid options for touch and push buttons mated to an LCD screen. These screens have a built-in thermostat for hotel applications

∙        Enviro Series – This is a 4.3 Screen with multiple page options and controls for multiple air condtioners with one screen. These panels are available in both white and black colours.

∙        Granite Series – This is available in both US & UK form factors & is equipped with a high-resolution AMOLED screen offering superior clarity. This too offers multi-page operations with built-in thermostat for AC controls

∙        Tile Series – Tile is a modular solution that offers various configurations from 1 to 4 gangs. Using the Tile display different combinations with push button / USB can be created. This range is available in White / Champagne Gold & Charcoal Grey colours

What is Guest Room Management System? (design Box)

A Guest Room Management System (GRMS) is a specialized software solution designed to enhance the operational efficiency of hotels and similar lodging establishments. Its primary purpose is to streamline the management of room inventory and reservations. This comprehensive system encompasses tools for efficiently handling reservations, tracking room availability, setting pricing, managing billing, and organizing customer information.

Incorporated within the GRMS are valuable features such as housekeeping management, inventory control, and robust reporting and analytics tools. These elements empower hotel managers to make informed, data-driven decisions to improve their operations. By optimizing room occupancy and pricing strategies, a Guest Room Management System not only bolsters the hotel’s efficiency but also elevates the guest experience, ultimately leading to increased revenue.

Adding his insight Jubin Thomas, Territory Sales Manager -India & Subcontinent Region Lutron GL Sales & Services Pvt. Ltd.  says, “For properties looking to take the guest experience to the next level, the answer can be delivering heightened comfort and control of the room environment. Control of the lighting level, drapery position, roller shade position, and temperature set point can be streamlined and beautified to create guestrooms that delight and offer comfort at the touch of a button.  The Lutron myRoom guest management system offers an improved guest experience both on arrival and throughout the stay. Welcome scenes are activated upon guest arrival. Guests open the door to a carefully curated scene that showcases the view and the finishes and furnishings in the room in its best light. There are currently 55,000 guestrooms in the world that use Lutron myRoom to deliver a special guest experience and extraordinary comfort. The recently built Ritz Carlton in Mexico City is one incredible example.” 

Solution and Technology

Some of the key automation functions are it lowers operational costs. When a guest leaves his or her room, for instance, automatic occupancy sensing and reporting allows housekeeping to make informed decisions about when to clean a room. While automated control of shades or tinting glass can cut cooling costs, particularly where the building facade receives direct solar radiation.

Hotels waste the most energy when rooms are unoccupied. Automation from companies such as Control4, Lutron, Legrand,  ABB, BuildTrack, Havells, Siemens, Crestron, Schineder  to name a few companies offer various solutions.  The energy-management system can also receive that notification, prompting the temperature to return to a lower-power-consuming neutral level. Hotels often have unoccupied rooms on a given night, and if the temperature and lighting isn’t controlled, it is simply costing the hotel money.

Then there are the benefits gained from guests using Apps on their smartphones. Not only is technology making the check-in and check-out procedure more convenient, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology incorporates keyless entry into a guest’s mobile device. Geolocation-based services provide additional benefits, such as monitoring guest arrival and departure status, room usage and trends, enhancing emergency response, and directing staff and guests to available meeting spaces and parking.

Wireless systems using radio-frequency identification (RFID) are also being used to enable access to rooms and to detect when people or things enter and leave. There are companies offering solutions in which an RFID chip is mounted on the underside of food carts. RFID readers that capture the transmission of the tag can be installed in hallways. So when a cart rolls into or out of a guest room, the reader senses that and sends an alert to staff that a cart at a specific location is ready to be collected. That saves labour time and improves guest satisfaction.

“One of the key functionalities of GRMS is its ability to communicate with third-party systems, including supervisors, access control systems, and Property Management Systems (PMS). There is a diverse range of control options available within GRMS, catering to various requirements and aesthetics. These controls encompass conventional (or mechanical) controls, BUS-SCS controls, touch controls, automatic controls (utilizing sensors and door contacts), hotel-specific controls (such as Keycard readers and DND/MUR control), and “network” controls, which involve commands from external systems like supervisors, access control systems, and PMS. This array of control options offers a broad spectrum of functions, ergonomic designs, and aesthetics to suit any hotel environment, whether it’s traditional, modern, or luxurious. The “network” controls play a crucial role in enabling seamless integration with external systems, enhancing the efficiency and functionality of the GRMS in the hotel setting.” explains Mohit Suyal, Product Marketing Manager, Home Automation, Lighting Control and GRMS, Legrand.

Advantages and Benefits 

Room Control: GRMS systems enable guests to control various room amenities like lighting, climate (heating and cooling), curtains or blinds, and even entertainment systems (TV, audio) through a centralized control interface, often provided via a touchscreen panel, mobile app, or TV remote.

Energy Management: The system can optimize energy consumption by adjusting the room’s lighting and climate control based on occupancy and guest preferences, thus helping hotels reduce their energy costs and environmental impact.

Room Status Monitoring: The system can monitor room occupancy and status, allowing hotel staff to better manage room turnovers and cleaning schedules. For example, when a guest checks out, the system can automatically switch off lights and HVAC systems.

Integration with Property Management System (PMS): Many GRMS solutions are integrated with the hotel’s PMS. This integration allows for more efficient check-in and check-out processes, as well as billing and room assignment coordination.

Guest Services: The system can provide information and services to guests, such as room service ordering, scheduling wake-up calls, or requesting housekeeping services.

Customization: Hotels can customize the GRMS to align with their branding and guest experience. For instance, they can set up lighting and climate profiles for different room types or tailor the interface to match the hotel’s style.

This residence resonates with modern elegance and possesses the latest smart home technology. Mr. Alok Chaurasia, CMD of GTL Infra (Group company of GTL Pvt Ltd) had a clear vision in mind for this residence.

Mr. Chaurasia’s initial skepticism, about embedding an IoT-enabled Home Automation solution into a home, washed away after the several detailed discussions & meetings with Crabtree Home Automation Solution [Havells System Integration partner, M/S ELMEC].

The Scope of Work

The project involved complete automation of the residence including lighting, fans, shades/curtains, air conditioning, water heating, fountains, audio zoning, and home theatre. The scope of work included planning and design of the complete automation solution including:

1. Lighting Design and automation
2. HVAC integration
3. Audio Zoning and Distribution
4. 20-Seater Home Theatre Design & implementation
5. Complete Networking Solution
6. Security and Video Door Phone
7. Complete Voice Control
8. Complete integration on a Single Platform 

The Client’s Vision

The client wanted a state-of-the-art, fully integrated smart home that would make life comfortable, with easy-to-use controls. He further desired a premium luxurious feel to his home, with a scalable automation solution to accommodate any future innovations & expansion.

Challenges Faced 

The biggest challenge of all in executing large-scale home automation projects is the coordination with different vendors. Each vendor has to be aligned in tandem to ensure the end product is as per the customer’s vision.

Automations Integrated 

The complete backend of the automation was designed with Crabtree’s Buspro Wired Technology. All control Modules including Relays, Dimmers, IR Emitters, Fan control Modules, Curtain Controllers, Curtain Motors & Tracks, and Programming Gateways were from Crabtree.

All Bedrooms were equipped with Crabtree DLP keypads with inbuilt Thermostats with 2 iTouch keypads on both bedsides. The common areas were equipped with Crabtree’s Full touch enviro keypads with inbuilt thermostats. 

A total of eight zones were created for ambient music. Control 4’s Eight Zone Audio Matrix and Eight Zone Power Amps are used for Audio Zoning, complemented with Bose Ceiling and Wall Speakers. 

For the security aspect, all entry doors had Yale smart door locks and Hikvision IP cameras installed. More cameras were placed at all critical locations to ensure complete coverage. 

The entire backend networking was done using Ubiquiti-managed switches and Unifi access points, to create a seamless Wi fi network across all three floors.

Control 4’s DS2 door station serves as the primary doorbell, along with Control 4’s intercom service delivering the doorbell’s visual & sound directly to the client’s smartphone. 

The 20-Seater Home Theatre was fitted with Bose professional loudspeakers, subwoofers (9.2), and amplifiers, a Denon AVR connected all speakers to achieve a total immersive Dolby Atmos effect. 

A Sony 4K Projector, delivers a massive 300-inch display onto an Elite ALR Fixed Frame Screen. A DUNE HD player allowed for a movie library and an Apple TV 4K for all streaming entertainment. 

The home’s other heavy loads including geysers and fountain motors were powered with Havells double pole contactors and relays were used to automate them. 

All the automation was integrated into a single app using Control4 EA5 Controller to provide the client with a single UI to operate and monitor his home.

Eventual Outcomes – The Project Phases

Planning: The first phase involves understanding the client’s requirements and a study of the drawings to map out the areas where automation is required, and the elements needed to be covered. A budget was crafted with all the information provided, creating a BOQ that delivered the maximum performance cost-effectively.

Design: The design process began when an ELMEC team started work on the wiring SLDs, server areas, and automation DB’s. The lighting design included phase-cut dimming along with normal switching. 

Once the speakers locations were decided and networking endpoints were mapped, the home theatre layout was finalized.

Implementation: The technical team worked in coordination with the interior team to put all wiring in place as per design. Once all the hardware items including lighting, speakers, Server racks, DB’s, automation modules, etc were installed, all the keypads were programmed and set in place.

Testing: A double-check of all terminal points, connections, and powering up of all devices was conducted. All of the automatic integrations were well tested to ensure the seamless working of all components including Lighting, HVAC, curtains, AV equipment, and security devices. The keypads were thoroughly tested for proper functioning.

 Handover: The residence was handed over after a dedicated day’s coaching session for the family to completely utilize and understand the capability of an integrated Home Automation Solution.

The importance of pre-planning everything to the minutest detail becomes highly crucial when executing an automation and AV system for a large-scale residence. Increasing the amount of time spent on the designing phase of the project reduces errors during execution and testing, and also ensures that the project stays within the estimated expenses.
