With nearly three decades of experience behind him, Deepak Sapru, the CEO of Quba, is a dynamic leader at the forefront of India’s fastest-growing hardware brand. Under his leadership, Quba has flourished, becoming synonymous with innovation and reliability in the industry.

Passionate and driven, Deepak Sapru eagerly delves into Quba’s extensive lineup of digital locks and digital safes, catering to diverse customer segments with precision and expertise. In an exclusive interview with Smart Home World, Deepak discusses their state-of-the-art product line and future launches.

Could you provide a comprehensive overview of the digital locks and digital safes offered by Quba across various customer segments?

If we broadly divide the customer segments in three parts based on their spending capacity as Economy, Mid and Premium then, Quba preciously has the products to cater every category. May it be Safes or Digital Lock, Quba doesn’t compromise on quality, technology or aesthetics of the products even if it’s for Economy Segment.

The newly launched Qraft – 5-way access digital lock and Magnus – Safe series are examples of the same.

What are the standout features that differentiate Quba’s Digital Locks in terms of security and convenience for users?

As the Qraft’s tagline goes `Security has never been so stylish’, Quba literally live up to that. We provide wide range of technology features in all of our digital products such as Hijack Alarm which has ability to send SOS signal through lock, without touching your phone, then we have Passageway Function which basically disables locking mechanism of the door which saves the trouble of unlocking the door every time in case of some occasion or party and security feature like OTP generation, where temporary password can be created for your guest or maid. Over and above all this, we have our own mobile application which help you monitor all the locks from anywhere in the world.

How does Quba proactively address potential vulnerabilities within the digital lock and safe technology, such as addressing concerns related to hacking or electronic malfunctions?

Quba Digital products go through three step QC with surprise inspections of manufacturing sites by independent inspection agencies. Every wireless communication between device and mobile is encrypted and inserted user data is stored on secured cloud of Application Platform.

As we said earlier, Quba doesn’t compromise on quality, technology or aesthetics of the products.

In the context of the ever-evolving smart home landscape, how does Quba’s digital lock and safe technology seamlessly integrate with other smart home systems and devices? Specifically, can you touch upon features like biometric access, keyless entry, and remote control?

In all the fingerprint-based locks, Quba provides 360 degrees fingerprint sensor which saves the pattern of the fingerprint and not the photos; but now, Quba is not only confined to the Main door Lock or Safe, as we have launched Qsense which is a furniture lock product series & has similar features like main door lock that makes even furniture lock equally secure and safe. Quba’s Upcoming Digital lock like “Quest” will be having VDP (Video Door Phone) integration capabilities. Even upcoming Premium Safes will be Mobile App Compatible. That not only provides the convenience of keyless entry/opening but also peace of 24/7 monitoring using the mobile app.

Could you elucidate the various connectivity options accessible with Quba’s digital locks and safes, encompassing aspects like mobile apps, remote access, and compatibility with the Internet of Things (IoT)?

Like most of the Digital locks, we provide Fingerprint, password, RFID & Mechnical key option but key point is, even in our economy series main door locks, we provide inbuilt Wifi connectivity and not a Bluetooth using which we can unlock the Wifi Digital lock from anywhere using Quba Smart App.  That make our Quba Smart App a one stop solution for all the devices connected to network. As we mentioned earlier, upcoming Quba Lock will be compatible with VDP & allied products like Qeye a Wifi Video Door Bell & Qbot a Wifi 3MP home PTZ camera are part of Quba Family which can be accessed on same Quba Platform.

One of Quba’s renowned product lines, QUANTRA, has been honored with the prestigious RedDot Design Award. Could you share the unique selling points (USP) of this range?

Design and Elegance are at the core of the Quba products which we bundle up with user convenience and technology. Quantra is the product of all these things craft together. The uniqueness of the product is the Push-Pull Design of Quantra which is very unique & adds into it utility. Apart from all these, Quantra is wifi inbuilt lock with electronic lock body and comes with wide range of mobile app & security features.

Let’s delve into the digital safe offerings provided by Quba. What options do you offer, and could you provide insights into the application areas where these safes find relevance?

Quba’s Digital Safe provides impeccable security merged with aesthetic design and has to offer something for every market segment. Our Astrix-001 & Astrix-002 are premium Wi-Fi safes that are mainly would be used for high-security requirement areas such as Gold/Diamond factories or High-profile personal cabins. Astrix-002 being fire resistant, adds to the security.

Our Magnus-003 to Magnus-006 are Laser cut dual access mode safes that are most suitable for the mid-market customer segment, who is looking out for security with style. Having Fingerprint, password, and mechanical keys as three opening options, provides triple peace of mind. Lastly, for the economy market segment where the price of the product is on priority, we provide Magnus-001 & Magnus-007 which have strong bodies of 2mm thickness and doors of 4mm thickness. Also, these digital safes provide access through a password and mechanical key.

Smart Home World gives you a cursory glance at the latest innovation and advancements in Digital Locks.

Traditional locks are making way for Digital Locks! First, let’s clear your misconceptions regarding digital locks. They are not as complicated as they are made out to be. They are simple to operate, sleek in design, and function and of course, they are secured. One of the main reasons for their growing popularity is that Smart Door Lock systems offer enhanced security and convenience by allowing homeowners to control and monitor their doors remotely using advanced technology. Some key features and advancements in smart door lock systems include Keyless Entry, Remote Access and Control, Integration with Smart Home Ecosystems, Virtual Keys and Guest Access, Biometric Recognition and Voice Control.

Those few who are skeptical about opting for these Digital Locks, need to understand; their mechanism and the latest advancements that make them foolproof. Smart Home World simplifies things for you:

What are Digital Locks?

Digital Locks are electronic locking devices that operate by means of electric current. Electric locks are sometimes stand-alone with an electronic control assembly mounted directly to the lock. Electronic door locks are more easily accessible because all you have to do is program a unique access code instead of fumbling around with different keys. Also, keypad electronic locks can give a general overview of who’s been in and out of your apartment. Digital locks outfitted with advanced encryption standards are quite secure, and most digital locks have built-in anti-theft alarms.

Functions and Network Support

A Bluetooth smart lock doesn’t require a hub or a Wi-Fi network. Bluetooth devices can connect directly to a smartphone or computer. Bluetooth smart locks are best suited for apartments or small homes and only need to control the lock while you’re at home.

There are various types of smart locks, these include keyed, keyless, various types of hybrids using keypads with and without keys, some with physical Near-Field Communications (NFC) keys, and the latest development the door can be accessed using auto-unlocking via smartphone geo-fencing, Apple HomeKit, Apple Siri and Apple Watch.

Different Types of Smart Locks

Smart Locks are fast becoming common fixtures in Indian homes and commercial spaces. One of the factors is multiple brands available offering affordable pricing. These new-age smart locks come with a wide range of functions.

Keypad and Combination Smart Lock

The Bluetooth-enabled Smart locks with keypads require a master passcode to unlock the door. You can also set up passcodes for different people. Combination keypad smart locks come in several varieties: keypad deadbolts, keypad deadbolts with a knob or lever and keypad deadbolts with a handle. You may have a touchscreen or physical buttons to push. Many models easily connect with other smart home equipment.

Wi-Fi Smart Locks

Some smart locks feature Wi-Fi connectivity that can be paired with a smart home hub like Amazon Echo. Working via Apps, these products let you lock or unlock your door from anywhere with a wireless connection. You can also track opening and closing history and share e-keys with family, neighbours, repair technicians or other trusted individuals. No more making copies of keys and trying to remember who has them!

Bluetooth Smart Locks

Bluetooth options with smart locks offer the same functionality as Wi-Fi without draining your battery as quickly. With this capability, you can connect your locks directly to your mobile device instead of a smart home system. You’ve got Wi-Fi capabilities plus a sensing feature that unlocks automatically when your mobile device is within a set distance from the smart lock, usually 30 feet.

Some Bluetooth-enabled locks forgo Wi-Fi connectivity altogether. This is arguably a more secure option since Bluetooth requires proximity to work; meaning, a potential hacker would need to be within at least 3 feet of the lock to even attempt to engage with it.

Latest Innovations: The latest innovation in digital door locks for homes involves the integration of advanced technologies to enhance security, convenience, and connectivity they are as follows:

Biometric Recognition: Biometric technology, such as fingerprint scanning or facial recognition, is increasingly being incorporated into digital door locks. These locks can identify authorised individuals based on their unique biometric traits, providing a high level of security and convenience, as there is no need for traditional keys or PIN codes.

Mobile Connectivity: Many digital door locks now offer integration with smartphones and other mobile devices. This allows homeowners to control and monitor their locks remotely, granting access to visitors or family members even when they are not physically present. Mobile connectivity also enables features like real-time notifications, lock status updates, and the ability to grant temporary access to guests.

Virtual Keys and Access Codes: With the rise of the sharing economy and short-term rentals, digital door locks are incorporating features that allow homeowners to generate virtual keys or access codes for specific periods. This enables easy and secure access for guests, service providers, or delivery personnel, without the need for physical keys or key exchange.

Voice Control and Smart Home Integration: Digital door locks are increasingly compatible with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, enabling homeowners to control the locks through voice commands. Integration with smart home systems and platforms also allows for automation and seamless integration with other connected devices in the home, enhancing overall security and convenience.

Advanced Encryption and Security Features: As digital door locks become more prevalent, manufacturers are investing in robust encryption protocols and security features to protect against hacking and unauthorised access. These locks often employ technologies like AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to ensure secure communication and data protection.

Battery Backup and Emergency Access: To address concerns about power outages or lock malfunctions, digital door locks now often come with battery backup options. In case of a power failure, these locks can still be operated using alternative power sources or physical keys. Some locks also feature emergency access mechanisms, such as hidden keyholes or manual override options, providing fail-safe options for homeowners.

These innovations in digital door locks for homes aim to enhance security, convenience, and connectivity, catering to the evolving needs and expectations of homeowners in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.

Ar. Manish Kumat has designed a Smart Home for a young couple in Indore that brings added comfort and convenience through smart automation to the homeowners.

Ar. Manish Kumat Design Cell headed by Manish Kumat has the extraordinary talent of seamlessly integrating nature as a part of interior spaces. The award-winning architect has designed some of the landmark projects over the years. Manish has recently designed a project in Indore for a young couple, where he has seamlessly integrated Nature, Design and Smart Automation which has not just provided ease of convenience but also provided foolproof security and energy efficiency which is the need of the hour.

This young couple wanted their four-bedroom apartment spread over an area of 1,890 sq ft to be converted into a spacious three-bedroom apartment with contemporary interiors and smart home technology. Adhering to the brief Ar. Manish broke a few walls to create a spacious space such as a large master bedroom with a lounge area and a walk-in closet space. In addition, Manish also created sleek, easy-to-maintain interiors, so he opted for furniture and fittings with straight lines and materials that are easy to clean.

Explaining his design approach and use of Smart Automation, Manish said, “I focused on providing the client with amenities to be functional and remotely controlled to offer them security, convenience, and energy saving. I had extensive discussions with them to understand their requirements. They wanted home automation from entrance access to the control of lighting, fans, air-conditioning, television, and curtains. Initially, we were a bit conservative in our approach toward smart technology due to fluctuations in voltage and unpredictable electricity supplies. However, this scenario has changed in the past few years as electricity supply has improved. Another point is that smart home automation is easier for the tech-savvy who easily understand how to control devices by an App on their phone or a networked device.” He further adds, “Though personally, I had not previously worked on smart home technology, we did thorough market research and went ahead and designed their home. We incorporated smart technology in different aspects of their home and living in a way that was inconspicuous while keeping to our design ethos of neat spaces with accent elements.”

After extensive research of the brands available in the market, the architect decided on Lutron for the lighting control system. For the lighting fixtures, they opted for Plus Light Tech which has a huge range of good quality fixtures and a good warranty as well. “The combination of Lutron and Plus Light Tech turned out to be amazing. After a thorough study of how smart lighting technology was to be incorporated into the home, each light had a separate wiring system as it went to the Lutron server. This had to be worked out in detail. We used a DALI driver that has a single interface for all light fixtures and controllers. This driver functions well. It helps to dim and tune the colour temperature of the lights. Thus, in one single light, the client gets a choice of temperature possibilities that makes it efficient and economical. For the entrance door, we opted for Yale digital door lock that offers access by a key as well as keyless (via number and biometrics).”

Advantages of Smart Automation

“As the client is a young couple and technology savvy, they found it easy to operate the automated systems. They are thus able to work with many amenities as per their preferences. For the lighting, they can create an ambiance in the interiors by opting for a particular tone and brightness of light such as soft in the evenings or in the living room and bright in the kitchen area. For controlling the sound of the television, we provided a sound bar that has a discreet speaker system that creates an effect close to that of a home theatre. A sound bar is space efficient and sound-effective.

Advice to Budding Professionals

“Clients are more tech-savvy today than in previous years. So, I would suggest that budding professionals should study products in the market, meet vendors and educate themselves about products and systems. Firstly, one must study the dynamics of the location of the site in terms of the availability of a regular supply of electricity and products if a backup is required. I feel it is better to go in for a high-quality product with a good warranty of several years so there is a good performance. A backup should be planned in case any system does not function, and this backup should be available at the earliest so the inconvenience caused to the client is minimized. All the systems should be explained thoroughly and demonstrated to the client before the project is handed over to the client.”

Overall, the architect has successfully combined his design philosophy and Smart Home Automation and delivered the projects within a stipulated time period to his clients.

Hogar Controls, a global IoT company with a design-first approach and delivering robust solutions for smart homes, has launched an all-new range of Smart Touch Panels, World-class Controllers, Digital Door Locks, and Smart Curtain Motors in the Indian market. The US-based company, which set up its assembling unit in Hyderabad in 2019, started the complete manufacturing process in India in April 2022. The company is committed to the Indian market and is now in the process of manufacturing custom-designed products for the Indian market. It uses cutting-edge technology and design thinking to make a wide range of new, easy-to-use, and stylish products for homeowners, retailers, and professional integrators.

Hogar Controls is focused on building an omnichannel business in the home automation market. They have inaugurated its first exclusive Hogar Controls Experience Centre in Delhi. The experience centre houses a highly curated range of smart home products and solutions and offers the customers a first-hand experience of smart home living under one roof. The massive store that spans an area of 6000 sq. feet was inaugurated by Mr. Hemant Sud, Chairman – IIID Delhi Chapter, yesterday, in the presence of leading architects and interior designers.

Mr. Vishnu Reddy, CEO – Hogar Controls, said, “As the impact of the IoT is already evident in every consumer’s home, we at Hogar Controls intend to redefine connected living with our core smart home offerings. Our first Hogar Controls experience centre in Delhi is a one-stop-shop solution for architects, interior designers, and contemporary consumers who are increasingly shifting to smart homes. As we aim to expand operations across India, we will very soon launch our experience centres in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and Kolkata. “

Mr. Jaspreet Singh Bhatia, Vice President – Hogar Controls, said, “In addition to our existing premium range of products that primarily appeal to the HNI community, our all-new Hogar Elite range of products and solutions cater to the larger market and are tailor-made keeping in mind the needs of the end consumers. Our products also feature a complete retrofit design that allows for simple installation into any existing switchboard without the need for additional wiring or remodelling. We are the only company that has a full range of retrofit and wireless smart home automation and security solutions all under one roof.”

Wi-Fi-enabled Smart Touch Panels

With a design-first approach and as a part of holistic smart home solutions, Hogar’s touch panel series includes product variants under the Prima and Prima+ series. The company, which has so far focused on catering to the HNI community and hospitality sector with high-end smart touch panels that work on Z-Wave technology, has now introduced a new Wi-Fi-enabled product variant under the Prima series. Retaining its premium look and build quality of the products, the company has launched the new Wi-Fi variant, primarily targeting builders and the upper-middle/middle-class segment. The Wi-Fi series smart touch panels are compatible with any smartphone and voice-controlled via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant on supported devices via sensors. The smart touch panels are heat, humidity, and shockproof and come with three and six smart touch panels, which have options like light dimming, fan controller, and curtain control, and can further be customised as per the user’s needs.

World-class Smart Controllers

Hogar Controls intends to redefine connected living with the launch of their next generation of world-class Smart Controllers – (1) Smart Hub and (2) Smart Mini Hub. Both devices help in setting up seamless connectivity and faster processing amongst all the smart devices. The Smart Hubs are configured for either a local network or to the cloud, and allow the user to operate all connected devices via the Hogar Pro App. While the Smart Hub can connect over 232 Z-Wave devices, the Smart Mini Hub connects up to 60 Z-Wave devices.

Digital Door Locks

Hogar Controls’ all-new Smart Indoor Locks are enabled with multi-unlocking modules that include fingerprint, password, physical key, app unlock, and card access. While the door lock modules are waterproof, moisture-proof, and mildew-proof, high and low temperature, vibration, and ageing tests are thoroughly conducted to make the product adapt to any harsh environment. The combined unlocking and double function feature strengthens the security level of the lock and makes the door highly secure.

Smart Curtain Motors

The smart curtain motors VEIL can be installed, configured, and included in your smart home ecosystem in just 2 minutes. The new built-in automation control feature adds to the plug-and-play and lets the user control and schedule the curtains and blinds with predefined auto modes, supporting different lengths and to the scale of 75%, 50%, and 25% through the Hogar SE App. These motors can also be used standalone, without any separate automation system, and can be controlled via voice through Google and Alexa. The uniquely designed, efficient motors offer high and balanced torque for smooth movement and operate almost at negligible noise levels, thus making the Hogar Smart Curtain range the best-in-class in its category.

The most distinguishing feature of all Hogar Solutions is that they operate on a single ecosystem and application.
