Collaboration between Ar. Anil Ranka Architects and Arhat Automation set a new benchmark for Smart Homes through Oswal Residence in Pune.

Anil has designed a 5 BHK residence in the heart of Pune’s vibrant city, located in Mudra Society, where the integration of smart home automation has revolutionized the concept of contemporary living. Explaining the design concept Ar. Anil Ranka adds, “The client’s vision for the project was crystal clear – a modern, contemporary space that catered to the needs of the entire family, from young kids to elderly parents. Additionally, the client desired a dedicated entertainment area where the family could bond over movies and sports events.”

This 5,000 sq ft apartment is a stunning amalgamation of technology and aesthetics. With a focus on user-friendliness and convenience, the home automation system seamlessly combines Legrand products for lighting and curtain control, along with RTI’s Centralized App for comprehensive management.

Concept and Material Usage

One of the defining features of this residential interior is his skillful use of materials. He has a keen eye for selecting high-quality materials that complement the overall design and add depth to the spaces. The interplay of materials like wood, glass, metal, and stone creates a rich and textured environment, enhancing the visual appeal of the interiors.

Anil has used natural materials, such as wood, to bring an organic and inviting element to his designs. Simultaneously, the strategic use of glass allows for abundant natural light, making the interiors feel open and airy.

Smart Automation Integration

To fulfill the client’s requirements, Arhat Automation proposed a centralized wired system for lighting and curtain automation using Legrand products. “Legrand’s reputation for reliability and high quality, along with their ability to seamlessly integrate with third-party products, made them an ideal choice for the project. Legrand Arteor switches were chosen for physical control, offering flexibility and ease of use,” says  Shreyans Rathod, Founder Arhat Enterprises.

The integration of smart home technology brought numerous benefits to the client. With a single App provided by RTI, the client gained complete control over lighting, curtains, audio video, and HVAC systems. Customised scenes could be created to suit various moods and occasions, eliminating the need to manage multiple switches or remote controls.

A key highlight of the project was the home theater, featuring a 5.1.2 system with Paradigm speakers and an SVS Sound Subwoofer. The setup was connected to a Denon AVR and a BENQ projector with a 110″ fixed Acoustic screen, providing the ultimate cinematic experience within the comfort of the home.

Ar. Manish Kumat has designed a Smart Home for a young couple in Indore that brings added comfort and convenience through smart automation to the homeowners.

Ar. Manish Kumat Design Cell headed by Manish Kumat has the extraordinary talent of seamlessly integrating nature as a part of interior spaces. The award-winning architect has designed some of the landmark projects over the years. Manish has recently designed a project in Indore for a young couple, where he has seamlessly integrated Nature, Design and Smart Automation which has not just provided ease of convenience but also provided foolproof security and energy efficiency which is the need of the hour. 

This young couple wanted their four-bedroom apartment spread over an area of 1,890 sq ft to be converted into a spacious three-bedroom apartment with contemporary interiors and smart home technology. Adhering to the brief Ar. Manish broke a few walls to create a spacious space such as a large master bedroom with a lounge area and a walk-in closet space. In addition, Manish also created sleek, easy-to-maintain interiors, so he opted for furniture and fittings with straight lines and materials that are easy to clean. 

Explaining his design approach and use of Smart Automation, Manish said, “I focused on providing the client with amenities to be functional and remotely controlled to offer them security, convenience, and energy saving. I had extensive discussions with them to understand their requirements. They wanted home automation from entrance access to the control of lighting, fans, air-conditioning, television, and curtains. Initially, we were a bit conservative in our approach toward smart technology due to fluctuations in voltage and unpredictable electricity supplies. However, this scenario has changed in the past few years as electricity supply has improved. Another point is that smart home automation is easier for the tech-savvy who easily understand how to control devices by an App on their phone or a networked device.” He further adds, “Though personally, I had not previously worked on smart home technology, we did thorough market research and went ahead and designed their home. We incorporated smart technology in different aspects of their home and living in a way that was inconspicuous while keeping to our design ethos of neat spaces with accent elements.”  

After extensive research of the brands available in the market, the architect decided on Lutron for the lighting control system. For the lighting fixtures, they opted for Plus Light Tech which has a huge range of good quality fixtures and a good warranty as well. “The combination of Lutron and Plus Light Tech turned out to be amazing. After a thorough study of how smart lighting technology was to be incorporated into the home, each light had a separate wiring system as it went to the Lutron server. This had to be worked out in detail. We used a DALI driver that has a single interface for all light fixtures and controllers. This driver functions well. It helps to dim and tune the colour temperature of the lights. Thus, in one single light, the client gets a choice of temperature possibilities that makes it efficient and economical. For the entrance door, we opted for Yale digital door lock that offers access by a key as well as keyless (via number and biometrics).”

Advantages of Smart Automation

“As the client is a young couple and technology savvy, they found it easy to operate the automated systems. They are thus able to work with many amenities as per their preferences. For the lighting, they can create an ambiance in the interiors by opting for a particular tone and brightness of light such as soft in the evenings or in the living room and bright in the kitchen area. For controlling the sound of the television, we provided a sound bar that has a discreet speaker system that creates an effect close to that of a home theatre. A sound bar is space efficient and sound-effective. 

Advice to Budding Professionals 

“Clients are more tech-savvy today than in previous years. So, I would suggest that budding professionals should study products in the market, meet vendors and educate themselves about products and systems. Firstly, one must study the dynamics of the location of the site in terms of the availability of a regular supply of electricity and products if a backup is required. I feel it is better to go in for a high-quality product with a good warranty of several years so there is a good performance. A backup should be planned in case any system does not function, and this backup should be available at the earliest so the inconvenience caused to the client is minimized. All the systems should be explained thoroughly and demonstrated to the client before the project is handed over to the client.”

Overall, the architect has successfully combined his design philosophy and Smart Home Automation and delivered the projects within a stipulated time period to his clients.

Ashutosh Wad & Manjunath Hathwar of Space Dynamix along with Beyond Alliance have designed a contemporary Smart Apartment that is characterised by clean lines and subtle colours. 

In this totally claustrophobic, chaotic urban space around us, this residential apartment transcends you into a different zone where you can spend some time delving into your mind and relaxing.

This 4 BHK apartment designed by architect Ashutosh Wad and Manjunath Hathwar of Mumbai-based Space Dynamix along with Crestron – Beyond Alliance has a timeless appeal. Explaining the design concept Ashutosh Wad adds, “In this project, we have aimed at achieving a minimalistic yet practical decor. Detailing is such that maintenance is minimal thus making this abode easy to live in, never overpowering the senses while elevating one’s mood gently.”

The family of husband and wife, two daughters, one son, and grandmother all three generations living under one roof wanted simple yet classy decor for their home. 

Explaining the design concept, Manjunath Hathwar adds, “We tried to incorporate colours in limited proportion. One admires the extensive use of blue Romano Marble around the bed back and the same flouted pattern is replicated in other areas.” 

The layout planning was the most important phase in this project as the client was not happy with the builder-provided layout. The team redesigned the interiors to incorporate all the client’s requirements. Another important aspect of the design was the integration of Smart Automation into this apartment. Adding further insight into the design concept Manjunath adds, “One of the most important challenges was the ceiling height, so we opted for in-ceiling speakers in such a way that the ceiling height wasn’t compromised at all and yet we were able to get a 7.1 audio in place.” 

Beyond Alliance, the technology partners for this project provided their expertise for automation, audio-visuals, networking, and security solutions. Beyond Alliance has opted for Crestron systems to add intelligence to the homes. Right from Human Centric Lighting to dimmable tunable lights, Somfy motorized shades and drapes, biometric smart locks from eKey, surveillance in common areas and a robust Wi-Fi wired mesh network using Aruba are skillfully incorporated in the home.

Speaking about the advantages of Smart Automation Ashutosh adds, “The automation is not a product that breeds laziness, it is all about adding artificial intelligence into the homes. Everyday routines of the users are fed into the system. Drapes open at the scheduled times, sleep patterns in terms of when to switch the AC Off and when to turn the fan On at what hour of the night and at what speed are all a part of the night scene. We program energy-saving routines by balancing the use of natural and artificial lighting.” 

He further elaborates, “User-friendliness is the core reason for choosing Crestron. The App is customizable. The youngest and eldest should be able to use the projector and be able to navigate through the tech without any learning curve.”

Encouraging younger budding designers Manjunath adds, “Automation system can only be as good as its integrator, and after-sales support strength is as important as technical expertise. Evenflow Eternal, an Audio Visual specialist based out of Surat, Gujarat had a simple brief for Ar. Dhaval Rangani, where they wanted their studio to aesthetically display their high-end product range and also provide a unique experience to the customers. 

Breaking away from the typical showroom design, Ar. Dhaval has skillfully created an interactive space where the project provides a superior audiovisual experience to the customers. 

Scope of Work 

Evenflow Eternal theatre is intended to be dynamic, as opposed to the rigid form of their prior theatre. Dhaval carried out the concept by designing spaces with minimal enclosures and unconventional materials that are not generally considered audio-friendly, yet produce the ideal audio-visual experience. The elemental ethos is based on how the human senses work in a fixed space.

The Client’s Vision

The client desired a new and upgraded theatre that would provide a premium experience to its clients. Their objective was to offer an unparalleled experience. The customer wanted Dhaval to design a studio that challenges the visitor’s perception of what is normal. As a result, unconventional materials were used in the project, such as absorptive and diffusive materials like vehicle dampening substances on metal.

The client requested that smart automation technologies be deployed to ensure the hassle-free operation and to create a seamless environment. It was intended to provide users more control over different ambiences at the touch of a button, making it more user-friendly.

Project Planning and Implementation

Dhaval treated the space like a blank canvas, where major civil changes were executed, especially in terms of the flooring. After careful analysis, planning, and meticulous preparation, Dhaval and his team established a plan to execute the one-of-a-kind spatial narrative based on the elemental `ethos of human senses’.

To begin with, the spaces were organised in a way that the entrance area acts as a pause point and the service areas are sheltered behind a twisted brick wall. “The brick walls symbolise the theatre’s having a traditional foundation while emerging as a contemporary expression,” explains Dhaval.

The listening area had the function of active entertainment while the lounge space was rendered with a relaxed and passive demeanour. Both spaces exuded different moods and were divided by a partition designed with seven metal members and strings. These members are symbolic of the seven notes called Saptak, which comprise a musical scale in Indian Classical music. Strings and lighting were used to segregate both spaces to allow a smooth transition between the state of mind of an occupant using both spaces.       

To create a variation in level, the floor was raised with bricks to create a sunken theatre, which was layed with carpet to bring warmth and luxury to the space. Parts of the flooring were done in concrete with calculated grinding and polishing to generate the desired finish.

The intention was to create an experience for the visitors through their different senses. Further, to enhance that experience, the space was detailed with speakers and projector mountings made out of metal and wood in such a way that it could be adjusted as per the client’s needs. 

Smart Automation Integration

Audio Video 

ArchiTech Premium Range Dolby Atmos Audio Speakers (SC-602f – 6-1/2″ 2-way Round In-Ceiling / Wall): To provide an enhanced auditory experience, Dhaval installed Dolby Atmos Audio with SC-602f. This home theatre demo setup relies on audio objects and involves a Dolby Atmos-enabled audio-visual receiver (AVR).

The receiver will automatically know how many speakers are being used, what type they are, and where they’re positioned. From there, the object audio renderer (OAR) unpacks any metadata to scale each audio object appropriately and relay it through the designated speaker. This is all done instantaneously. 

ArchiTech Premium Range Audio Speakers (SE-LCRSf – 5-1/4″ 2-way In-Wall Loudspeaker): Keeping in mind the human senses’ elemental ethos, Dhaval chose the ArchiTech Premium Range Audio Speakers. Every ArchiTech model loudspeaker is `timbre-matched’ ensuring sonic uniformity throughout the line.

This means all models used in the installation have been carefully engineered to have a family sound; this is also referred to as `voice matching’.  As special effects from movie soundtracks move about the room, timbre-matching ensures a consistent tonal balance throughout the sound space. This creates a convincingly realistic three-dimensional spatial image, which completely absorbs the viewers into the cinematic experience. 

JVC Projectors (D-ILA Projector with 3D Viewing – DLA-X7900BE): JVC’s cutting-edge technologies for high-quality, high-definition images have realised the full potential of 4K; a dense, high-definition image of pristine quality, projected across every inch of a massive screen.

Visitors at Evenflow Eternal are able to fully enjoy beautiful picture quality with a powerful lifelike sense of realism for all types of video content, from movies to sports, music, documentaries, 3D etc.

The projector also supports next-generation technologies such as high dynamic range (HDR) content and video at 4K resolution. 

Smart Automation 

Lutron Lighting Automation: Lighting plays an important role in the spatial experience of this theatre. It is designed to guide the movement of the visitor through the spaces and control the visibility in order to avoid any visual distractions from unnecessary elements and to help accentuate other senses than just the visual. Lutron Lighting automation is imbibed to control this experience of the space. Various lighting moods have been designed for visitors depending on the functionality. 

A Lutron HomeWorks processor and a Universal Phase Cut Dimmer control all of the lights. Using the Home Server Module and Casadigi’s unique programming protocols, the lights can be automated in tandem with the rest of the space.

Casadigi Automation: The Casadigi application, combined with the Casadigi Home server and AV Module, controls the complete media system, allowing guests to have a highly smooth experience, obtaining value above normal, and creating an incredible atmosphere for their senses

CasaDigi supports iOS and Android platforms, making it an easy choice for Dhaval and his team. The solution supports wireless media transfers, playback, and search functions that allow visitors to quickly search by keyword, tags, and even location.

Yale Lock (YDR 414 Smart Lock): the team has opted for Yale YDR 414 to ensure the safety of the expensive technology on display at the Evenflow Eternal Showroom. The YDR 414 secures the premises with various access solutions: fingerprints, pin codes, remote control and mechanical keys override.

Benefits of Integration (In a Separate Box) 

The adaptability of Dolby Atmos in this home theatre demo setup is one of the major advantages. Dolby Atmos may be played on any speaker arrangement with up to 34 speakers. With additional speakers, audio objects may be placed more precisely. Evenflow Eternal may always improve its system with this option.

Smart Automation should be planned to keep the project, budget and users’ requirements. The builder/architect should meet with the clients to understand their requirements. Subsequently, after the Smart Automation system is planned, they should meet the client to explain the same to them. The systems should be user-friendly keeping in mind that people of different generations and mindsets will be using them. The selection of products should be undertaken at the very initial stage of the planning to avoid any conflicts during the project. The products should be smart in appearance and complement the overall interior design/décor. There are various options that are durable, easy to use, and readily available in the market.

I feel it is important to integrate smart systems into built forms like offices, malls, hotels, stores or residences. Smart Automation should be planned to keep the project, budget and users’ requirements. The builder/architect should meet with the clients to understand their requirements. Subsequently, after the Smart Automation system is planned, they should meet the client to explain the same to them. The systems should be user-friendly keeping in mind that people of different generations and mindsets will be using them. The selection of products should be undertaken at the very initial stage of the planning to avoid any conflicts during the project. The products should be smart in appearance and complement the overall interior design/décor. There are various options that are durable, easy to use, and readily available in the market.
