Collaboration between Ar. Anil Ranka Architects and Arhat Automation set a new benchmark for Smart Homes through Oswal Residence in Pune.

Anil Ranka’s design style can be described as modern and minimalist with a focus on clean lines, open spaces, and a harmonious blend of form and function. He is adept at creating interiors that feel timeless, allowing them to remain relevant and captivating for years to come. While his designs embody a sense of simplicity, they are far from mundane, as he infuses each space with a touch of luxury and warmth.

Anil has designed a 5 BHK residence in the heart of Pune’s vibrant city, located in Mudra Society, where the integration of smart home automation has revolutionized the concept of contemporary living. Explaining the design concept Ar. Anil Ranka adds, “The client’s vision for the project was crystal clear – a modern, contemporary space that catered to the needs of the entire family, from young kids to elderly parents. Additionally, the client desired a dedicated entertainment area where the family could bond over movies and sports events.”

This 5,000 sq ft apartment is a stunning amalgamation of technology and aesthetics. With a focus on user-friendliness and convenience, the home automation system seamlessly combines Legrand products for lighting and curtain control, along with RTI’s Centralized App for comprehensive management.

Concept and Material Usage

One of the defining features of this residential interior is his skillful use of materials. He has a keen eye for selecting high-quality materials that complement the overall design and add depth to the spaces. The interplay of materials like wood, glass, metal, and stone creates a rich and textured environment, enhancing the visual appeal of the interiors.

Anil has used natural materials, such as wood, to bring an organic and inviting element to his designs. These materials add warmth and a connection to nature, promoting a sense of well-being within the living spaces. Simultaneously, the strategic use of glass allows for abundant natural light, making the interiors feel open and airy.

Smart Automation Integration

To fulfill the client’s requirements, Arhat Automation proposed a centralized wired system for lighting and curtain automation using Legrand products. “Legrand’s reputation for reliability and high quality, along with their ability to seamlessly integrate with third-party products, made them an ideal choice for the project. Legrand Arteor switches were chosen for physical control, offering flexibility and ease of use,” says  Shreyans Rathod, Founder Arhat Enterprises.

The integration of smart home technology brought numerous benefits to the client. With a single App provided by RTI, the client gained complete control over lighting, curtains, audio video, and HVAC systems. Customised scenes could be created to suit various moods and occasions, eliminating the need to manage multiple switches or remote controls.

Home Theater Excellence

A key highlight of the project was the home theater, featuring a 5.1.2 system with Paradigm speakers and an SVS Sound Subwoofer. The setup was connected to a Denon AVR and a BENQ projector with a 110″ fixed Acoustic screen, providing the ultimate cinematic experience within the comfort of the home.

Benefits of Automation:

The smart automation system introduced a new level of convenience, comfort, and energy efficiency to the residents. Automated lighting and curtain control not only enhanced the ambiance but also helped conserve energy by allowing easy scheduling and management of lighting scenes. The integrated HVAC system ensured optimal temperature control without the need for separate thermostats.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals:

The success of this project emphasizes the importance of technical expertise and the selection of reputable brands. Home automation, when implemented with proper guidance and quality products, brings significant value to clients, making it an essential consideration for aspiring professionals.

The integration of smart home automation has transformed Oswal residence into a contemporary dwelling that perfectly balances aesthetics, functionality, and user-friendliness. The collaboration between Anil Ranka Architects and Arhat Automation has set a new standard for modern living, making it a true showcase of the endless possibilities offered by smart technology in residential spaces.

Hyderabad-based Architect Ar. Ravi Kumar Bathula, Principal Architect, THE DESIGN has designed a palatial home for G.Satyanarayana Goud spread over an area of 12,000 sq ft in Hyderabad. This residence not only resonates with modern elegance but has been integrated with the latest smart home automation systems.

Scope of Work

Ar. Ravi Bathula has skillfully merged modern design elements; seamlessly connected the lush green surrounding with interiors and further hired renowned system integrator Incygys Automation to integrate smart automation systems that has resulted in a perfect comfort zone for the homeowners. Further, one can admire the space planning, where each space is interlinked with each other to form a unified design and is further connected with home automation systems that take care of all the client’s requirements right from security, lighting to entertainment space.

The Client’s Vision

The affluent client wanted this home to reflect his status and lifestyle to the visitors. As the client is well travelled and is well versed with the benefits of automation systems, he had given a free hand to the Ar. Ravi Bathula  to install the latest automation systems. Hence, the residence is fully automated with a specific emphasis on lighting and technology. The architect designed the home to provide the client with an experience of a different kind where everything is at the touch of a button.

Project Planning & Implementation Phase

Ar. Ravi Bathula studied the project’s scope, the initial technology layout was designed. In the second phase, the architect’s floor plan was used to build and assemble wiring layouts, control devices, displays, equipment racks, speakers and lighting components that included switches and dimmers for the automation system. Next, the architect provided the integrator with all the information necessary to install and program the systems, as well as provide the client with comprehensive system documentation.

Automation Brands Used

The  architect segregated the entire project  into 11 zones, including the entryway, kitchen, living room, bedroom, media room, hallways, garage, lawn, walk-in wardrobe, bar lounge and outdoor seating area. Fewer compatible brands were utilised to maintain uniformity across the user interface, automation protocols, and system programming.

Automation solutions were provided using RTI, KNX, Hager, Legrand, and Basalte components. Invac offered Centralised Vacuum Systems, and the full integration was done by Incygys Automation from Hyderabad.

Installing the System

After a detailed study , the architect and the team finally decided to install Invac Central Vacuum Systems. Keeping the client’s convenience in mind, the system was customised to collect all dirt and waste in the house and direct it to an out-of-the-way receptacle via tubing installed in the walls. The power source has been concealed and positioned in a fixed location. The team has installed the inlets in convenient spots and around the house. Instead of connecting a portable vacuum to fixed electrical outlets, the team has provided flexibility to the owner to relocate the central vacuum line from the inlet and also provided an automatic dustpan that enables them to sweep dirt into a wall vent.

Smart Lighting Control

Smart lighting not only enhances the overall decor of the home but also provides the client with greater control over their lighting. They can manage each smart bulb and LED-integrated fixture wirelessly using their phone, tablet, and smart assistant. The installed lighting system provides the client with numerous tangible benefits in comparison to traditional bulbs, which require a switch to control the lights. Here the smart LED lights are controlled via an app or other smart accessories. The smart LED bulbs last significantly longer and produce less heat than standard light bulbs, requiring less energy and the client can check the status of their lights from anywhere, because they can be controlled remotely as well.

Smart Automation further provides the ease where the Smart LED bulbs can be set up individually or in groups. The client can configure timers to turn Off or On the lights at a certain time. When they are not at home, the system can be set to switch On and Off the lights mode.

Another noteworthy feature is the instant mood lighting, which is preset and the bespoke light fixtures can be operated at the touch of a button to create the required ambience. These light fixtures offer various colour options from warm lighting to white lighting or coloured LED lights.

HVAC Automation and Smart Control

Automation of HVAC systems lowers the need for human intervention. This was accomplished with the help of a Coolmaster HVAC automation controller. Coolmaster is a plug-and-play device that allows Home Automation to be seamlessly and universally integrated with any Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)  or Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) HVAC system. This device enables automation integrators to control, monitor, maintain and manage any VRF or VRV system by establishing a universal communication channel between HVAC and automation systems.

Benefits and Operation of the HVAC System

  • The process variable to be controlled: A process variable is the current measured value of a particular part of a process that is being monitored or controlled i.e. temperature
  • A desired control setpoint for the variable: In temperature control applications a setpoint is the target value (desired temperature) at which a controller attempts to maintain the process variable. This can be achieved by adjusting its control output power (the correcting variable).
  • A controlled device: The master controlling device is the thermostat.
  • A controller that manages decision making: A temperature controller is a device that is used to control the HVAC by comparing a sensor signal with a set point and performing calculations according to the deviation between those values.
  • A sensor to give some feedback for a directed change to maximise the energy efficiency with Automated HVAC Systems
  • Off-hour controls with automatic shutdown feature in HVAC systems regulate start/stop under different time schedules, based on occupancies, life safety and security reasons.
  • Motorised shutoff damper controls for outdoor air intake and exhaust systems automatically open or close the systems when not in use to reduce energy costs.
  • Ventilation fan controls to automatically shut off fans when not required.
  • Using static pressure reset based on the zone to optimise variable air volume (VAV) pressure in systems reduces the amount of power a fan needs.
  • Multiple-zone HVAC system, with supply-air temperature reset controls that respond to the outdoor air temperature based on the most recent climate zone.
  • Pump-pressure optimization in systems reduces pump energy by varying control valve positions in a hydronic system of the villa, resulting in variable fluid flows.

Benefits of other Integrations

Smart Water Management: The installation helps in controlled water irrigation for landscaping as well as monitoring water level through sensors where it automatically operates the water pumps.

Media Room: Specification and equipment in the media room included: 7.4.2 Dolby surround from TruAudio USA; Tru Audio Elite Series 46 – 7 channel surround; Marantz Amplifier and AV receiver; Tru Audio Atmos Surround and Sunfire Subwoofer.

Facade Illumination: Ar. Ravi Bathula majorly focused on the façade of the house and implemented Several lighting calibrations which set to give off different kinds of lighting based on the sun path.  The programming can also turn on and off automatically. Dimming Technology has been used extensively to highlight the architectural elements of the design. Through the use of RFID sensing, the gate will open and close on its own as the vehicles belonging to the client approach it.

Motion Sensing Lights: These lights have been installed in all bathrooms, washrooms and wardrobes. The Automated Window Treatment determines when the curtains are open or closed based on the lux level and the direction the window faces.

Benefits of Smart Automation

Technology has enabled the client to automate several parts of their bungalow. It enables them to run, manage, and monitor their home from their smartphones. The client achieved the ability to control appliances and lighting in their house from any location at the push of a button. They can lock their doors with a single click on their smart device from anywhere with automatic door locks. The client can regulate the HVAC system to set the temperature to their preference. Plus, with the home automation system, they are able to set thermostats from anywhere so that they arrive home to a suitable temperature. The client’s primary concern was the protection of their children which has been well managed through security cameras, they can open the doors and monitor when the kids come and exit.

This smart technology will save energy by turning off lights when children or adults forget to turn them off when leaving a room.

Experience & Takeaways

Each project we deal with requires a very unique solution and to see it come to life, and harmonise with the design language of the architects/interior designers is a thrilling experience. The projects we work on give us the confidence that we are providing a better future for our clients and we look forward to new innovations that enhance one’s lifestyle.

Our professional readers would like to know about Visual Tech?

Visual Tech is a Hyderabad-based proprietary firm founded in 2013. Initially, we concentrated solely on the sale of projectors for residential and commercial spaces. As new trends emerged and technology developed, we diversified into other verticals, including screens, displays, video conferencing and integration. We introduced complete home theatre solutions to our list of services six years ago. Being proprietary we are competing with big brands and competitors. Installations were challenging at first since we only supplied the equipment and the client or a third party was in charge of the installation. However, we eventually began to provide on-site services, which allowed us to generate more revenue.

What are the key products and services offered by the company?

Our key offerings include projectors manufactured by Sony, JVC, BenQ, and Epson; audio components produced by Denon, Marantz, FOCAL, JBL, Monitor Audio, B&W and Bose; automation components developed by UpHome Automation and RTI. In the display category, we stock products from a number of different companies, like AERO, Samsung, and LG.

What considerations are necessary while installing an AV solution?

When a client asks for an AV solution, we first figure out if the user will be able to use the technology easily. We educate the client in operating the product. The after-sales service is also an important criteria when selecting a specific brand. We also see that the spare parts are easily accessible so that we can turn things around quickly.

We offer solutions that are compatible with a number of brands because cross-compatibility can be an issue at times. UpHome Automation, for example, works well on both Android and iOS smartphones. Before installing any type of audiovisual system, we analyse the wattage of the speakers and determine which segment of amplifiers are compatible with them. As a result, we receive our solutions from a variety of sources, depending on the client’s needs and budget.

Lighting is also an important consideration. To eliminate issues such as glare, we are exceedingly cautious about how the systems are interconnected. When making calculations, we regularly use our database of previous projects. They act as a guide and help us avoid blunders. We make sure to deliver designs to the client ahead of time to ensure seamless integration. When working on a commercial project, we consider the size of the room as well as the number of individuals that will be present at any given time.

What are the USPs of Visual Tech?

At Visual Tech, we prioritise becoming better listeners. This is necessary throughout the design and planning phase so that we can offer our clients a feasible choice to install. By attentively listening, we not only provide a solution that meets the user’s requirements but also save them a substantial amount of money during installation and in the long term.

We provide quick turnaround times and are available to service users seven days a week by leveraging in-house expertise. We provide original serial numbers to maintain our clients’ trust. Our in-house designers develop 2D and 3D drawings for the project at the client’s request to explain how the system works.

Our demo rooms are also a unique selling point. The client’s experience there increases their likelihood of purchasing the solution. We offer demos and have designed packages based on our research and experience that cater to a large number of clients’ individual demands and budgets.

Describe in depth the benefits of custom A/V solutions to the user.

Any custom A/V solution gives the user complete control. It is fully up to the individual to watch what and when they wish to watch. An immersive theatre experience in the comfort of their own home. A private media room allows users to unwind and spend time alone or with family and friends.

The combination of high-quality visuals, professional audio and full automation brings entertainment to a new level. Access to cutting-edge technology is widely regarded to be advantageous because it increases the market value of the space.

Are your products equipped with energy-saving features? What tangible benefits does the user receive?

Our initial proposal to the client highlights the energy-efficient facilities. Our devices include energy-saving features. Eco mode on projectors reduces the brightness of the lamp. Similarly, amplifiers can be configured to consume less power from a power supply.

One of our automation projects included an energy-efficiency case study. The project featured complete automation of the home, from entry gates to exhausts and ventilation. Motion sensors were installed to regulate the lights. Human-centric lighting and other smart home automation features were included. The study’s objective was to determine how much energy was consumed and how much was saved as a direct result of automation, as well as where efficiency may be enhanced.

What was the demographic of your target market? Who are the primary buyers?

Most of our buyers in the residential market are people who buy or live in villas or bungalows in upcoming areas or in gated communities. We have also worked with apartments in high rises as well.

In the commercial segment, we have helped MNCs with video conferencing and AV solutions. In addition to that, we have provided clients in the government sector with video conferencing systems and displays. For panels and displays, hospitals have also been among our clientele.

We have marketed displays to people in the hospitality business. There is a growing demand for AV solutions. There is a market for audio and video solutions. So it’s a new market that we want to look into. We currently have 32 interior designers and 13 architects on board.

What are the most recent trends in the A/V industry?

Our emphasis has always been on the residential segment.  We had a number of enquiries for custom AV projects during Covid, however, due to the extraordinarily intensive workload and strong demand, these projects were implemented after lockdown as our cities were opening up. We have seen a rise in commercial projects, although majority of our projects are still residential.

In terms of future trends, the customer knows what they want and is operating within a realistic budget.

What was the game-changing breakthrough in the audio-video sector, and how did it impact our way of life?

HDMI is a game changer in the market since connectivity has become extremely simple. Any product from any brand that has an HDMI input and output can be paired with any other product from any brand.

Another noteworthy change is that people can now get the technology at a price they can afford. Users now have many options to choose from because so many new brands continue to enter the markets.

Due to the shrinking sizes of residential and commercial spaces, how important do you believe space management is for city dwellers? What solution does Visual Tech provide for optimal space management with a touch of luxury?

When space is an issue, there are a few options. To begin, we connect via Bluetooth or WiFi. Second, we strive to minimise cabling in such settings by using equipment that allows plug and play, such as short throw projectors, satellite speakers, lower screen sizes and so on.

We recently completed a project in which the room was barely 10 x 12. We chose a 90-inch screen, a 4K short-throw projector, and satellite speakers with Atmos. We were able to modify the package to accommodate a reduced room area and deliver a 4K solution.

Changing out projectors for television screens and installing a powerful soundbar is yet another strategy for optimising the use of space. The experience that one gets from using one of these systems is comparable to that of using a home theatre.

How would you separate the Indian market for premium display, projection, and audio systems from the global market? What brands do you believe are suited for Indian homes?

The quantity of exposure to new technology makes a significant difference. In this regard, the Indian market is still evolving. Alternative technology must be adopted instead of traditional methods.

For example, the international market favours digital outdoor advertising to printed billboards. This product has the potential to be profitable in India. Large digital displays in commercial locations can also be a lucrative advertising venture as well.

Consumer psychology is another variation between the Indian market and others. Even while the number of Indians adopting AV solutions is expanding significantly, they are still those who are cautious to commit. In other nations, specialised AV solutions have become a way of life but it is considered luxury here.

Audiophile-grade speakers from B&W and Focal are part of the home theatre systems. For budget-friendly alternatives brands like Monitor Audio, JBL Elac, and so on, are the best solutions. Brands like Bose are frequently asked for a home theatre upgrade rather than a brand-new setup.

What are your areas of expertise in sectors such as commercials, hospitality and retail interiors? Which of your brand’s offerings do you make available for projects of this nature?

Our areas of expertise include residential AV solutions as well as digital display for the commercial and retail sectors. When it comes to high-end projects, we offer projectors made by Sony and JVC. And also offer displays made by LG and Samsung. We provide a variety of video conferencing solutions, including interactive screens for conference rooms made by Polycom and Logitech.

What are the most popular and sought-after brands for 4K and 8K cables and accessories?

The majority of the cable that we utilise comes from AudioQuest. We do make use of notable names, including premium brands like Kordz.
